18 Maha Shakti Peethas of Devi
18 మహా శక్తి పీఠాలు — Sati Devi Body-Part Shrines
The 18 most powerful Devi pilgrimage destinations in India
The Shakti Peethas are sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati's body fell after Lord Vishnu cut her corpse with the Sudarshana Chakra. Per the Devi Bhagavata Purana, there are 51 Shakti Peethas (108 per some Tantric traditions). The 18 Maha Shakti Peethas are the most important — together with the 12 Jyotirlingas, they form the dual pilgrimage circuits of Shiva-Shakti devotion. Visit Kashi Vishwanath + Vishalakshi together, or Srisailam Mallikarjuna + Bhramaramba — these are the rare combined Jyotirlinga + Shakti Peetha cities.
The 18 Maha Shakti Peethas
The Origin Story
King Daksha (Sati's father) once organized a grand yajna and deliberately excluded Lord Shiva (Sati's husband). Sati attended without invitation and was insulted by Daksha's mocking of Shiva. Unable to bear the insult, she self-immolated in the yajna fire. Shiva, devastated, carried her corpse across the cosmos performing the Rudra Tandava — a dance of grief that threatened universal destruction. To stop the cosmic catastrophe, Lord Vishnu cut Sati's body into pieces with the Sudarshana Chakra. Where each piece fell, a Shakti Peetha was established. Sati was later reborn as Parvati and reunited with Shiva.
