The Telugu Panchangam Tradition

Telugu households follow Chandramana (lunar-solar) reckoning, with the year boundary at Ugadi (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — typically late March or early April). The Telugu calendar uses a 60-year Samvatsara cycle; the current year (2026-27) is Parabhava Samvatsara.

Modern Telugu panchangams almost universally use Drik Ganita (observational astronomy) with the Lahiri Ayanamsa. The dominant format is the "Gantala Panchangam" — providing hour-by-hour (gantalu) muhurtam tables alongside daily tithi / nakshatra / yoga / karana data. Major editions include Mulugu (Subhatithi brand), Pidaparthi, Vangipurapu, Chinta Gopi Sarma (Kalachakram), and the TTD (Srivari) Panchangam from Tirumala. Newspaper-bundled editions (Eenadu, Sakshi, Andhra Jyothy) reach the widest readership.

Most Telugu households consult the panchangam for daily muhurtam (auspicious time) selection — covering rahukalam, yamagandam, gulikai, varjyam, durmuhurtam — and for major life events (marriages, gruhapravesam, upanayanam, name-giving).
