Pooja Room Direction
The ONLY correct direction for the pooja room/altar is Northeast (Ishanya kona) — the direction of Lord Shiva and the most spiritually pure quadrant of the home. Worship facing East or North while seated.
If a dedicated room is not possible, a Northeast corner alcove, shelf, or wall-mounted shrine in the Northeast portion of the living room works.
Idol & Photo Placement
- Idol height: never above eye level when seated — keep below shoulder height while standing.
- Idols facing East or West only. Never facing south.
- Idol gap: at least 1 inch between idols — avoid crowding.
- Broken/chipped idols: immerse in flowing water immediately. Never display.
- Multiple Ganesha: only one Ganesha idol in the home (Tridosha rule).
- Lakshmi-Ganesh seated, Hanuman facing east: follow classical positioning.
Lamp & Worship Rules
- Lamp (diya) placement: Southeast corner of the pooja platform. Ghee lamps face West (toward devotee).
- Light the lamp daily: sunrise + sunset (sandhya). Skipping sunset lamp = inviting negative energy.
- Akhand jyot (continuous flame): sesame oil + brass lamp = traditional choice. Refill in early morning only.
- Water vessel (kalash): place a copper kalash with water in the pooja room — represents Ganga.
What NOT to Place in Pooja Room
- Photos of deceased family members
- Mirrors
- Toilet on adjacent wall, above, or below
- Beds or bedroom-related items
- Footwear or shoe rack
- Garbage bin
- Pictures of wild animals (except Nandi, Garuda, sacred cows)

Yes — most Vastu doshas can be remedied using classical Pariharas including copper yantras (Kubera, Vastu Purusha), mirrors to "complete" missing corners, sea salt bowls to absorb negative energy, camphor burning to disperse stagnant energy, and annual Vastu Shanti puja by a qualified Vaidika.
