Why Saraswati Holds the Veena

సరస్వతీ వీణ

Today's Hindu Mythology Story · Friday, 4 September 2026

The Story

Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge, holds the veena (a stringed instrument) — not as decoration, but as the very symbol of her teaching. The veena's strings produce harmony only when tuned correctly. Knowledge, like the veena, requires tuning: too tight (rigidity) breaks the string; too loose (laziness) produces no sound. Only the precise middle tension creates beauty. Saraswati's white lotus seat, white clothes, and the swan companion all teach the same: knowledge is the discrimination (viveka) of milk from water.

The Spiritual Lesson

Saraswati teaches that learning is a tuning of the self — between rigor and ease, intensity and rest. The swan (hamsa) symbolizes the ability to discriminate truth from falsehood, like separating milk from water.

Suggested Practice for Today

Recite Saraswati Vandana ('Ya Kundendu Tushara') before studying; place books and instruments at her altar; especially on Vasant Panchami or during Navaratri.
