The Story

Devas and Asuras together churned the Kshira Sagara (Cosmic Milk Ocean) using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Vishnu took the form of Kurma (the tortoise) to support the mountain. Out emerged 14 ratnas (jewels) — including Halahala (cosmic poison), Lakshmi, Chandra, Kamadhenu, Airavata, and finally Dhanvantari with the pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality).

The Spiritual Lesson

The Samudra Manthan teaches that great achievements require cooperation even with rivals, sustained effort over time, and the willingness to face poison before nectar. Shiva drinks the Halahala to save the universe — teaching that those who lead must bear the worst burdens first.

Suggested Practice for Today

Visit a Vishnu or Shiva temple; recite Vishnu Sahasranama or Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra; meditate on the symbolism of churning one's own mind.
