Grahan Dosha
గ్రహణ దోషం
When Sun/Moon is conjoined with Rahu or Ketu in the birth chart
Grahan Dosha (గ్రహణ దోషం) — also called Eclipse Dosha — forms when Sun is conjoined with Rahu or Ketu (Surya Grahan Dosha) or when Moon is conjoined with Rahu or Ketu (Chandra Grahan Dosha) in the natal chart. The two luminaries get "eclipsed" by the shadow planets, dimming their natural significations. Effects span confidence issues, mental fluctuation, father/mother relationship struggles, and career uncertainty. Remedies include Surya/Chandra Beej mantras, Aditya Hridayam recitation, donation of wheat or rice on Sunday/Monday, and pilgrimage to Konark/Kashi temples.
Astronomical Basis — Why It Is Called "Eclipse Dosha"
Eclipses occur when Sun, Moon, and either Rahu or Ketu align in the sky. In a birth chart, when the same combination is present — Sun or Moon sharing a sign with Rahu or Ketu — the native carries the karmic imprint of being "born under eclipse energy" even if no actual eclipse occurred at birth.
Sun represents soul, authority, father, vitality. Moon represents mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Rahu and Ketu represent shadow karma — Rahu the unfulfilled desire, Ketu the spiritual completion. When they fall together in the same Rashi:
- Sun + Rahu (Surya Grahan): Eclipses the soul-vitality. Father issues, ego confusion, career obstacles, eye/heart concerns.
- Sun + Ketu: Surya Grahan variant. Spiritual pull, less worldly ambition, mystical experiences.
- Moon + Rahu (Chandra Grahan): Eclipses the mind. Anxiety, mental restlessness, mother health, unusual food cravings, vivid intuition.
- Moon + Ketu: Chandra Grahan variant. Detachment, meditative inclination, possible isolation.

Six Authentic Grahan Dosha Remedies
1. Surya Beej / Chandra Beej Mantra Japa
For Surya Grahan Dosha (Sun + Rahu/Ketu)
ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः
Telugu: ఓం హ్రాం హ్రీం హ్రౌం సః సూర్యాయ నమః
108× daily at sunrise facing east, ideally during Brahma Muhurtam
For Chandra Grahan Dosha (Moon + Rahu/Ketu)
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Telugu: ఓం శ్రాం శ్రీం శ్రౌం సః చంద్రాయ నమః
108× daily after moonrise on Monday, or during full moon nights
2. Aditya Hridayam Stotra
The Sun-strengthening hymn from the Ramayana, taught by sage Agastya to Lord Rama before his battle with Ravana. Daily recitation strengthens the Sun in the chart and gradually weakens the Rahu/Ketu eclipse effect. Recite at sunrise for 40 consecutive days minimum.
3. Donation (Daan)
- Sundays: Wheat, jaggery, copper coins, red cloth — to a temple or to the poor
- Mondays: Rice, milk, white cloth, silver, white sweets — to Shiva temple or to those in need
- For severe Sun-Rahu: red sandalwood paste donation
- For severe Moon-Ketu: white pearls or white quartz to temple
4. Temple Visits
- Konark Sun Temple (Odisha) — primary Surya remedial site
- Suryanar Koil (Tamil Nadu) — Navagraha Sun temple
- Somnath Jyotirlinga (Gujarat) — primary Chandra remedial site
- Thingaloor Temple (Tamil Nadu) — Navagraha Moon temple
- Kashi Vishwanath — neutralizing both Sun and Moon afflictions
5. Eclipse Day Practice
During actual solar/lunar eclipses, natives with Grahan Dosha should:
- Avoid eating during the eclipse period (sutak)
- Bathe in cold water before and after the eclipse
- Recite Maha Mrityunjaya 108 times during the eclipse window
- Donate food and clothes immediately after the eclipse ends
- Replace tulsi (basil) leaves in water vessels (the leaves themselves are considered eclipse-purified)
6. Service to Parents
Sun = father, Moon = mother. Genuine, consistent care for parents — phone calls, time given, support in their needs — is considered one of the most direct karmic remedies for Grahan Dosha. The dosha often dissolves over time when the native consciously honors the karaka relationships Sun and Moon represent.
