Bhakoot Dosha
భకూట దోషం
Moon-sign incompatibility in Ashta Koota marriage matching (7 of 36 gunas)
Bhakoot Dosha (భకూట దోషం) arises in marriage matching when the bride's and groom's Moon signs fall in inauspicious positions from each other — specifically the 6-8 (Shadashtak), 2-12 (Dwirdwadash), or 5-9 (Navam-Pancham) Rashi positions. Bhakoot carries 7 of 36 points in Ashta Koota Guna Milan, second-highest weight after Nadi. The 6-8 position is the most serious, affecting health and longevity; 2-12 affects finances; 5-9 (counted from each direction) affects children and family. Multiple cancellation rules (Bhakoot Dosha Bhanga) apply when Nakshatra-lord friendship, Nakshatra Porutham, or planetary aspects compensate.
What Is Bhakoot Dosha — The Rashi Position Rules
Bhakoot ("Rashi-koota") tests Moon-sign compatibility between two charts. After casting both birth charts, count the distance from the bride's Moon Rashi to the groom's Moon Rashi (both directions). Three inauspicious distance pairs trigger Bhakoot Dosha:
- 6-8 (Shadashtak): Moon signs are 6 from one and 8 from the other (e.g. Mesha-Tula = 7 apart, not Shadashtak; Mesha-Kanya = 6/8). Most severe — affects health and longevity of partners.
- 2-12 (Dwirdwadash): Moon signs are 2 from one and 12 from the other. Affects financial stability and family wealth.
- 5-9 (Navam-Pancham): Moon signs are 5 from one and 9 from the other. Affects children, education, and family expansion.
If Moon signs are in the same Rashi, 1st-7th from each other, 3-11, or 4-10 — Bhakoot is considered favorable (full 7 of 7 points). The 7th pair (e.g. Mesha-Tula) is in fact the most compatible "complementary opposites" configuration in classical matching.
Effects by Type
| Position Pair | Type | Primary Concern |
|---|---|---|
| 1st-7th (opposite) | Most favorable | Strong compatibility, balanced opposition |
| 3-11, 4-10 | Favorable | Easy harmony, good chemistry |
| Same Rashi | Favorable | Constitutional similarity — if Nadi differs |
| 6-8 (Shadashtak) | Severe Bhakoot | Health issues, conflict, longevity concern |
| 2-12 (Dwirdwadash) | Strong Bhakoot | Financial losses, expenses exceed income |
| 5-9 (Navam-Pancham) | Moderate Bhakoot | Children, education, family lineage |
Bhakoot Dosha Cancellation Rules (Bhakoot Bhanga)
Classical Jyotisha texts list multiple conditions under which Bhakoot Dosha is considered cancelled or significantly weakened:
- Nakshatra lords are friends: If the lord of the bride's Nakshatra and groom's Nakshatra are mutual friends (Vrihat Parashara Hora Shastra friendship table), Bhakoot is cancelled.
- Same Nakshatra lord: If both bride and groom have Nakshatras ruled by the same planet, Bhakoot is cancelled.
- Lagna friendship: If the lords of bride's and groom's Lagnas (rising signs) are friendly, Bhakoot weakens significantly.
- Strong Nakshatra Porutham: Even with Bhakoot, if Dina Porutham, Gana Porutham, and Rajju Porutham are favorable, Bhakoot is considered overruled.
- Same Rashi different Nakshatra: When both are in same Moon Rashi but different Nakshatras with different Nadis, the configuration is favorable rather than problematic.
- Jupiter aspects: Strong Jupiter (in own sign, exalted, or in 7th house) in both charts cancels Bhakoot.
