Rudraksha — Complete Guide to All 14 Mukhis

Quick Answer: Rudraksha (literally "Tears of Shiva") are sacred beads from the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree found in Nepal Himalayas, Indonesia, and parts of South India. Each bead has natural divisions called "mukhis" (faces) ranging from 1 to 21+. Each mukhi corresponds to a deity and planet, giving specific spiritual and material benefits. The 5 Mukhi (Panchmukhi) is universally safe; other mukhis are chosen based on rashi or specific needs.

How to Wear Rudraksha

  1. Purchase from a certified seller (verify with X-ray report for higher mukhis).
  2. Cleanse the rudraksha: soak in raw cow milk + Ganga jal for 24 hours.
  3. Energize (Pran Pratishtha): On a Monday before sunrise — place on banana leaf with kumkum + turmeric + sandalwood. Light ghee lamp. Recite Om Namah Shivaya 108 times. For specific mukhi, also recite the corresponding deity's mantra 108 times.
  4. Wear: Thread through red, yellow, or black thread (NOT cotton — avoid getting wet too easily). Many devotees wear in silver caps. Position: pendant or mala.
  5. Daily care: Apply mustard or sandalwood oil weekly. Never let it dry completely. Remove during cremation ceremonies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which rudraksha is best for everyone?
The 5 Mukhi (Panchmukhi) Rudraksha — ruled by Kalagni Rudra and the planet Jupiter — is universally safe and beneficial for ALL rashis and ages. It supports health, peace, dharmic life, and spiritual progress. It is the most worn rudraksha globally and is recommended as the starting practice for anyone new to rudraksha.
How do I identify an authentic Rudraksha?
Authentic Nepali rudraksha has: (1) clear deep grooves separating each "mukhi" face, (2) consistent natural brown color (not artificially dyed), (3) sinks in water immediately and consistently (some fakes float, but some authentic ones float too — water test is not definitive), (4) X-ray verification (the only reliable test — authentic rudraksha shows distinct internal compartments matching the mukhi count), (5) certificate from reputed seller (Rudraksha Ratna, Rudra Centre). Beware: most "5 mukhi" rudraksha in India is genuine but quality varies.
Can women wear rudraksha?
Yes, absolutely. Women can wear all rudrakshas. The old belief that women cannot wear rudraksha during menstruation is from earlier orthodox traditions and is not universally followed today. Modern acharyas confirm rudraksha is gender-neutral and brings the same benefits to women as men.
Should I wear rudraksha during sleep, bath, or in toilet?
Traditional practice: remove during sleep, bath, and toilet visits. Modern wear: remove only during cremation ceremonies. Some devotees wear continuously. The simple rule: respect — if you would not enter a temple wearing it during a particular activity, remove it. Always wash and dry the mala before re-wearing.
Can I wear multiple mukhi rudrakshas together?
Yes, with consideration. Compatible combinations: 5 + 6 (Jupiter + Venus — relationships); 5 + 12 (Jupiter + Sun — leadership); 1 + 14 (Shiva + Hanuman — spiritual mastery). Some combinations are NOT recommended: 6 + 8 (Venus + Rahu — relationship instability); 9 + 12 (Ketu + Sun — afflicts ego). When in doubt, wear only the recommended primary mukhi for your rashi.
How long does a rudraksha last?
Properly cared for, an authentic Nepali rudraksha lasts a lifetime and beyond — many are passed down through generations. Care: oil weekly with mustard or sandalwood oil; never let it dry out completely (it cracks). If it cracks or breaks during a major life event, traditional belief is that it absorbed negative karma for you — bury it respectfully near a peepal tree and procure a new one.

About These Calculations

Our Vedic calculators use astronomical-grade ephemerides converted to sidereal positions via the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of India's official sidereal standard since the 1955 Saha Committee Calendar Reform. The Moon Sign (Chandra Rāśi) calculator computes the Moon's longitude using a simplified ELP-2000 lunar model, then subtracts the Lahiri Ayanamsa (currently ~24°13′) to get the sidereal position. Dividing the result by 30° gives the rāśi (sign).

Accuracy Note

For ~95% of dates the result matches the position computed by professional ephemerides (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri Ephemeris). For dates near rāśi boundaries (within 3° of a sign edge), we display a warning to verify with a Vedic astrologer — small algorithmic differences can place the Moon in the adjacent sign. Pure observational accuracy to the minute requires birth time and place precision.

Trust & Methodology

Algorithms developed by Pandit Ramachandra Sharma, Vedic Astrologer & Panchangam Scholar, in consultation with classical Sūrya Siddhānta and the modern Lahiri Ephemeris. For deeper reading on Lahiri's foundational work, see Lahiri Ayanamsa. For more Vedic tools, see all calculators.
