This Kundli generator computes planetary positions using
VSOP87-derived simplified mean orbital elements with
Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of
India sidereal standard since 1955. The Lagna (Ascendant) is computed
using the standard formula: Local Sidereal Time minus arctan(cos(LST)
/ (sin(LST)cos(ε) − tan(lat)sin(ε))), where ε is the obliquity of the
ecliptic (23.44°).
Accuracy Note
For ~95% of dates within 1900-2100, planetary positions are accurate
to within 1° of professional Swiss Ephemeris output. Moon position can
vary up to 2° due to simplified ELP-2000 lunar perturbations. For
ritual-critical decisions (marriage muhurtam, name selection, gemstone
prescription), please cross-verify with a professional astrologer
using full Swiss Ephemeris precision.

A Kundli (also called Janma Patrika or Jathakam) is a Vedic birth
chart that maps the position of the Sun, Moon, planets, and
ascendant (Lagna) at the exact moment of birth. It is the
foundational document for all Vedic astrological analysis.
Why do I need exact birth time?
The Lagna (Ascendant) changes approximately every 2 hours. A
4-minute error in birth time can shift the Lagna into the adjacent
sign, which fundamentally changes the entire chart interpretation.
For ritual-critical readings, get a birth-time rectification done.
What is Lahiri Ayanamsa?
Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa is the Government of India official
sidereal correction standard, defining the difference between
tropical and sidereal zodiac. Adopted in 1955 based on N.C. Lahiri's
foundational ephemeris. Current value ~24°13′.
What is Vimsottari Dasha?
Vimsottari Dasha is the 120-year planetary period system used in
Vedic astrology to predict the timing of life events. Each planet
has a fixed Mahadasha period (Sun 6 years, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18,
Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17, Ketu 7, Venus 20). Starts based
on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
About These Calculations
Our Vedic calculators use astronomical-grade ephemerides converted to sidereal positions via the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of India's official sidereal standard since the 1955 Saha Committee Calendar Reform. The Moon Sign (Chandra Rāśi) calculator computes the Moon's longitude using a simplified ELP-2000 lunar model, then subtracts the Lahiri Ayanamsa (currently ~24°13′) to get the sidereal position. Dividing the result by 30° gives the rāśi (sign).
Accuracy Note
For ~95% of dates the result matches the position computed by professional ephemerides (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri Ephemeris). For dates near rāśi boundaries (within 3° of a sign edge), we display a warning to verify with a Vedic astrologer — small algorithmic differences can place the Moon in the adjacent sign. Pure observational accuracy to the minute requires birth time and place precision.
