Kaal Sarp Dosha
కాల సర్ప దోషం
When all 7 planets are caught between Rahu and Ketu
Kaal Sarp Dosha (కాల సర్ప దోషం) forms when all seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — are positioned between Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart. Approximately 8–10% of all natal charts carry this yoga. It is classified into 12 types based on Rahu's house placement (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachuda, Ghatak, Vishdhar, Sheshnag). Effects span career obstacles, mental anxiety, delayed marriage, and progeny issues. Authentic remedies include Nag Panchami puja, Trimbakeshwar Kaal Sarp shanti, Rahu Beej mantra (108×), and donation of silver serpent images.
What Is Kaal Sarp Dosha — Astronomical Definition
Kaal Sarp Yoga is described in Bhrigu Samhita and discussed extensively in modern Jyotisha treatises like Kaal Sarp Yog Aur Uska Vidhan. The yoga is purely positional — it forms when Rahu and Ketu occupy axis houses (1-7, 2-8, 3-9, 4-10, 5-11, 6-12) and all seven traditional planets are contained on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis. If even one planet falls outside this enclosure, the dosha is considered partial (Kaal Sarp Yoga Bhang) or absent.
"Kaal" means time/death and "Sarp" means serpent. The mythological basis comes from the Skanda Purana story where Rahu and Ketu — the severed head and tail of the asura Svarbhanu — represent the karmic shadow that swallows the planetary light. Astrologically, Rahu denotes obsessive desire and Ketu denotes spiritual detachment; their axis represents the karmic past unresolved.
Modern Vedic astrologers note that Kaal Sarp Dosha is not always negative. Many world leaders, including Jawaharlal Nehru and Sachin Tendulkar, are reported to have variants of this yoga. The dosha intensifies struggle in early life but often produces extraordinary success after age 30–35 if the native channels energy properly.

How to Check Kaal Sarp Dosha in Your Birth Chart
- Cast your Vedic (sidereal) birth chart using Lahiri Ayanamsa — use our free Kundli calculator.
- Identify Rahu's house and Ketu's house. They will always be exactly 180° apart (in the 7th house from each other).
- List the house positions of all 7 planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn.
- If every planet falls between Rahu and Ketu when traversing the zodiac in one direction (the "swallowed" semi-circle), full Kaal Sarp Dosha is present.
- If even one planet is on the Ketu-to-Rahu side, the yoga is partial — effects are reduced by 50–70%.
- Also examine the Navamsa (D9) chart — if the Rahu-Ketu axis is broken in the divisional chart, the dosha is much milder.
Important: Software-generated "Kaal Sarp Dosha = YES" results often miss the partial-dosha rule. Always have a qualified Jyotishi verify the Navamsa and the strength of individual planets before undertaking expensive remedies.

The most prescribed remedy in classical literature is the Kaal Sarp Shanti Puja at Trimbakeshwar, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas.
1. Mantra Japa (Daily Recitation)
Rahu Beej Mantra (108 times daily for 40 days)
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Telugu: ఓం భ్రాం భ్రీం భ్రౌం సః రాహవే నమః

Recite 108 times daily, ideally during Brahma Muhurtam. Full text and audio.
2. Trimbakeshwar Kaal Sarp Shanti Puja
The classical and most powerful remedy. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga near Nashik (Maharashtra) is the prescribed location. The complete puja is performed on the bank of River Godavari and takes 3–5 hours. Includes Rudrabhishek, Narayan Nagbali, Tripindi Shraddha, and Sarp Sukta recitation. Performed only on specific Tithis — Panchami, Ashtami, Ekadashi, or Amavasya.
3. Nag Panchami Puja (annual)
Observed on Shukla Panchami of Shravana Masam (July–August). Worship a silver serpent image with milk, turmeric, sandalwood, and white flowers. Read Satyanarayan katha with family in the evening.
4. Daan (Donation Remedies)
- Donate silver Naga images at Shiva temples on Mondays
- Donate black sesame seeds on Saturdays (Rahu/Ketu's lord Shani)
- Donate blankets to the poor on Saturdays in winter
- Donate coconuts and bananas at Hanuman temples
- Feed dogs (Bhairav's vahana, who controls Rahu) on Saturday evenings
5. Tirtha Yatra (Pilgrimage Remedies)
- Trimbakeshwar — primary Kaal Sarp shanti site
- Nageshwar Jyotirlinga (Gujarat) — the "Lord of Serpents"
- Kalahasti (Andhra Pradesh) — famous for Rahu-Ketu puja
- Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple (Kerala)
- Kukke Subrahmanya (Karnataka) — Sarpa Samskara puja
6. Gemstone Remedy
Gomedh (Hessonite Garnet) for Rahu and Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) for Ketu. Wear ONLY after a qualified Jyotishi verifies your chart — wrong gemstone can amplify the dosha. Minimum carat weight: 4–7 carats, set in silver, on the middle finger (Rahu) or ring finger (Ketu).
When Kaal Sarp Dosha Cancels or Weakens
Many classical texts list Kaal Sarp Yoga Bhanga (cancellation rules). The dosha is significantly weakened when:
- Rahu is in own sign (Virgo, Aquarius) or in its mooltrikona (Gemini).
- Jupiter aspects Rahu — Jupiter is the natural neutralizer of Rahu's shadowy effects.
- A strong benefic (Jupiter or Venus) sits with or aspects Lagna lord.
- Navamsa chart breaks the axis — planets scatter across both sides of Rahu-Ketu in D9.
- The native is born during a Solar or Lunar Eclipse with benefic aspects — interestingly, this is sometimes called a "cured at birth" Kaal Sarp.
- Sun or Moon is exalted in the chart.
- Native has multiple Raj Yogas — Kaal Sarp acts as a "delay then deliver" yoga, often coinciding with massive late-life success.
