Composed by Sri Prativadi Bhayankaram Annan (Prativadi Bhayankara Annangaracharya, 14th-15th century CE)
The Venkateswara Suprabhatam is the most famous morning prayer in South India — sung at Lord Venkateswara's shrine at Tirumala (Tirupati) every morning at 3:00 AM to ceremonially wake the deity. Composed by Prativadi Bhayankaram Annangaracharya (a disciple of Manavala Mamuni in the 15th century CE). The Suprabhatam consists of four sections: Suprabhatam (29 verses — awakening), Sri Venkateswara Stotram (11 verses — praise), Prapatti (16 verses — surrender), and Mangalasasanam (14 verses — auspicious blessings). Total ~70 verses, ~25-30 minutes of recitation.
Opening Verse (Sanskrit)
कौसल्या सुप्रजा राम पूर्वा सन्ध्या प्रवर्तते । उत्तिष्ठ नरशार्दूल कर्तव्यं दैवमाह्निकम् ॥
Transliteration (IAST)
Kausalyā suprajā Rāma pūrvā sandhyā pravartate / Uttiṣṭha narashārdūla kartavyaṃ daivam āhnikam
English Translation
"O Rama, son of Kausalya, the eastern dawn is breaking. Arise, O best among men, your divine morning duties await you." This opening verse (originally from the Bala Kanda of Ramayana — Sage Vishwamitra waking young Rama) is the most-recited line of the morning awakening hymn.
Structure & Sections
- 1. Suprabhatam (29 verses) — Direct awakening prayers to Lord Venkateswara. Beginning with "Kausalya Suprajaa Rama" verse from Valmiki Ramayana, continuing through references to all the great Vaishnava saints (Alvars) and acharyas (Ramanuja, Nathamuni, etc.) who praise the Lord at dawn.
- 2. Sri Venkateswara Stotram (11 verses) — Praise of the Lord's form, attributes, divine play, and dwelling on Seshachala (Tirumala) hill. References to his consort Sri Padmavathi.
- 3. Prapatti (Surrender) (16 verses) — The devotee's prayer of complete surrender. Asking for the Lord's grace and refuge from the karmic cycle. Central to Vishishtadvaita Vedanta philosophy.
- 4. Mangalasasanam (14 verses) — Closing prayers of well-wishing — for the Lord himself, the temple, the priests, the king, all devotees, and all beings. Concludes with "Mangalam Kausalendraya."
