Ashta Koota Guna Milan
అష్ట కూట గుణ మిళన
The 36-point Vedic compatibility test for marriage
Ashta Koota Guna Milan (అష్ట కూట గుణ మిళన) is the classical North Indian Vedic marriage compatibility system that scores partner alignment across 8 dimensions ("kootas") totaling 36 points. The 8 kootas (in increasing weight): Varna (1), Vasya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7), Nadi (8). Marriages scoring 18+ are considered acceptable, 24+ good, 28+ excellent, 32+ ideal. Below 18, multiple cancellation rules can rescue compatibility. South Indian tradition uses 10-Porutham instead which has overlapping but distinct categories.
The 8 Kootas Explained — Weight, Purpose, and Calculation
Sage Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra codified the Ashta Koota system over 2,000 years ago. Each koota tests a different dimension of compatibility — physical, mental, social, sexual, karmic, and constitutional. The point weights reflect classical importance:
| # | Koota | Tests | Max Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Varna | Spiritual/working class harmony | 1 |
| 2 | Vasya | Mutual attraction and dominance | 2 |
| 3 | Tara | Nakshatra-counted destiny & longevity | 3 |
| 4 | Yoni | Sexual compatibility (14 animal yonis) | 4 |
| 5 | Graha Maitri | Friendship of Moon-sign lords | 5 |
| 6 | Gana | Temperament (Deva/Manushya/Rakshasa) | 6 |
| 7 | Bhakoot | Moon-sign position relationship | 7 |
| 8 | Nadi | Constitutional (Adi/Madhya/Antya) | 8 |
| TOTAL | 36 |
Detailed Calculation of Each Koota
1. Varna Koota (1 point)
Each Moon Rashi falls into one of four Varnas: Brahmin (Karka, Vrischika, Meena), Kshatriya (Mesha, Simha, Dhanu), Vaishya (Vrishabha, Kanya, Makara), Shudra (Mithuna, Tula, Kumbha). Point given when groom's Varna is equal to or higher than bride's. Modern interpretation: this represents value-system alignment, not caste.
2. Vasya Koota (2 points)
Each Rashi has assigned "Vasya" Rashis (signs it influences). Full 2 points when groom's Rashi is a Vasya of bride's Rashi; 1 point when partial. Represents the dynamic of "who pulls whom" emotionally.
3. Tara Koota (3 points)
Count from bride's Nakshatra to groom's, divide by 9, and look at the remainder:
- Remainder 1, 3, 5, 7 — auspicious (3 points)
- Remainder 2, 4, 6, 8 — inauspicious (0 points)
- Remainder 0 (perfectly 9-apart) — neutral, varies by tradition
4. Yoni Koota (4 points)
Each Nakshatra is assigned an animal yoni (Horse, Elephant, Sheep, Snake, Dog, Cat, Rat, Cow, Buffalo, Tiger, Hare, Monkey, Mongoose, Lion). Same yoni or friendly pairs: 4 points. Neutral: 3. Slight enmity: 2. Enmity: 1. Severe enmity: 0. Tests biological/sexual compatibility.
5. Graha Maitri Koota (5 points)
Examine the planetary lords of bride's and groom's Moon Rashis. Both lords friends — 5 points. One-way friendship — 4. Neutral — 3. One-way enemy — 2. Mutual enemies — 0. The most weighted relationship factor.
6. Gana Koota (6 points)
See our detailed Gana Dosha guide. Same Gana: 6 points. Deva+Manushya or vice versa: 5-6. Manushya+Rakshasa: 3. Deva+Rakshasa: 0.
7. Bhakoot Koota (7 points)
See our detailed Bhakoot Dosha guide. Favorable Rashi positions (1-7, 3-11, 4-10): 7 points. Inauspicious (6-8, 2-12, 5-9): 0 points.
8. Nadi Koota (8 points)
See our detailed Nadi Dosha guide. Different Nadi: 8 points. Same Nadi: 0 points.
Score Interpretation
| Score Range | Verdict | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 32 – 36 | Excellent / Ideal | Most favorable — proceed with confidence |
| 28 – 31 | Very Good | Strong compatibility — minor remedies if any |
| 24 – 27 | Acceptable | Most marriages fall here — proceed with awareness of weak areas |
| 18 – 23 | Marginal | Check cancellation rules carefully; remedies recommended |
| 12 – 17 | Low | Significant work needed; major remedies + family consultation |
| Below 12 | Not Recommended | Classical advice is to seek other match; if love/circumstance dictates, deep counsel essential |
When Low Scores Can Still Work — Cancellation Rules
A low Ashta Koota score does not always mean marriage failure. Multiple cancellation rules can rescue compatibility:
- Same Moon Rashi, different Nakshatras with different Nadis: Nadi cancellation applies.
- Strong Jupiter (Guru) aspecting 7th house in both charts: Master cancellation rule.
- Nakshatra lords mutual friends: Bhakoot and Gana cancellations apply.
- Same Nakshatra lord between partners: Several kootas cancel automatically.
- Mahadasha lord of both partners benefic in 7th from natal Moon: Strong long-term compatibility despite low score.
- Strong 7th house in both charts: Marriage karaka (Venus/Jupiter) well-placed compensates.
Important context: A high Ashta Koota score does not guarantee a happy marriage, and a low score does not guarantee failure. Real compatibility depends on values, communication, family compatibility, and individual maturity. Ashta Koota is a starting point — not a verdict.
Ashta Koota vs Nakshatra Porutham — Which Tradition to Use?
Two parallel Vedic matching systems exist:
Ashta Koota (North Indian)
- 8 kootas, 36 total points
- Nadi has highest weight (8)
- Strong emphasis on Moon-sign and Nakshatra
- Standard in North India, Maharashtra, Gujarat
Nakshatra Porutham (South Indian)
- 10 Porutham checks, equal weight
- Includes Dina, Mahendra, Stree-Deergha, Rajju, Vedha not in Ashta Koota
- Emphasizes longevity, harmony, progeny
- Standard in Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala
Many modern matching tools compute both systems. If your family follows one tradition, use that as primary. See our Nakshatra Porutham guide for the South Indian system.
