How the Moon Sign Calculator Works
This calculator computes the Moon's sidereal longitude at 12:00 noon IST on your date of birth using a simplified ELP-2000 lunar model with Lahiri Ayanamsa correction. The Moon's longitude is then divided by 30° to identify which of the 12 Vedic Rashis (Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka, Simha, Kanya, Tula, Vrischika, Dhanu, Makara, Kumbha, Meena) the Moon occupied.
For ~95% of dates, the noon-IST estimate is accurate to the correct Rashi. If you were born near a Rashi boundary (specifically within ~6 hours of when the Moon crosses signs), the calculator may indicate the adjacent Rashi instead. Moon Sign (Chandra Rasi / Rashi) is the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of birth. In Vedic (sidereal) astrology, Moon Sign is the PRIMARY reference for personality, emotional nature, and most predictions — more important than Sun Sign which is used in Western astrology.
How is Vedic Moon Sign different from Western Sun Sign?
Western astrology uses Sun Sign with the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses Moon Sign with the sidereal zodiac. The difference: tropical and sidereal zodiacs are offset by ~24° (Lahiri Ayanamsa as of 2026). This means your Western Sun Sign and Vedic Moon Sign can be completely different signs.
Why do I need birth time for accurate Moon Sign?
