Deity
Sri Maha Ganapati (Vinayaka)
Tradition
Universal — every Hindu tradition; Andhra observes 5-11 day festival
Duration
2 hours (main puja) + optional visarjana on 3rd/5th/11th day

Why observe Vinayaka Chavithi?

Vinayaka Chavithi is the most-observed home puja in Telugu households. Ganesha, the vighneshvara (remover of obstacles), is invoked at the start of the astronomical year of new endeavours (Bhadrapada month). Per Ganesha Purana + Bhavishya Purana, sincere Chaturthi puja removes obstacles from all future work of the year.

📖 Vinayaka Chavithi Katha · The Chandra-Shraap Story

On his birthday, Lord Ganesha ate his fill of modakas at Kubera's house and rode home on his mouse. Seeing his large belly, Chandra (the Moon) laughed. Ganesha grew furious and cursed Chandra: "Whoever sees your face on this day (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi) shall be falsely accused." Even Krishna suffered — accused of stealing the Syamantaka gem after glimpsing the moon on that day. He performed Vinayaka Chavithi puja and read this very katha to remove the calumny. Thus tradition: on Vinayaka Chavithi, avoid looking at the moon. If accidentally seen, recite this katha 21 times as prayaschitta.

🕉 Samagri (Items Needed)

Idol

  • Clay Ganesha idol 1
Plain unpainted clay, 6 to 12 inches for a home puja. Painted and plaster-of-Paris idols do not dissolve — see step 10 before you buy one.
  • Permanent silver or brass Ganesha
Only if you are not doing visarjana. An idol already worshipped daily at home skips avahana and prana pratishtha.

Puja essentials

  • Kalasha with a coconut 1 set
  • Betel leaves 11
    Fresh and unbroken, stems intact
  • Betel nuts 5
  • Turmeric and kumkum a small box each
  • Chandan (sandal paste)
Paste, not powder. If you only have powder, mix a few drops of water into it before you sit down.
  • Red akshata 1 cup
Whole raw rice with no broken grains, tinted with a pinch of kumkum and a few drops of water
  • Raksha sutra (red thread) 1
  • Panchapatra and uddharini (water cup and spoon) 1 set
Any small metal cup and spoon will do; it sits on your right through the whole puja
  • A separate plate for nirmalya (used offerings) 1

Vinayaka Chavithi specific

  • Durva grass 21 blades
Three-leaflet clusters intact; snip with scissors rather than pulling the plant up
  • The 21 patri (leaves) 1 leaf each
Full list with Telugu and botanical names in the patri table further down this page
  • Red hibiscus as many as you can get
The flower most associated with Ganesha; any red flower if hibiscus is unavailable
  • Marigold or rose garland 1 to 2
  • Shami leaves a few
Offered together with the flowers in upachara 8

Fruits and food offerings

  • Undrallu / kudumulu 21 or 108
Method in step 7. Twenty-one is the household count; 108 is done at temples and for a sankalpa vratam.
  • Bananas 11
  • Coconut 2
One for the kalasha, one for the tambulam
  • Seasonal fruits 5 varieties or more

Other

  • Ghee lamps 2
Cotton wicks. Both are lit before the sankalpam and left to burn out on their own after the aarti.
  • Camphor and agarbathi
Two different offerings — agarbathi is the dhupa upachara, camphor is the nirajanam. Buy both.
  • Panchamrita 1 small bowl
Milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar mixed
  • Red cloth for the asana 1
  • A small new cloth and a yajnopavita thread
    For upacharas 5 and 6
  • Chowki or low table 1
Set it so the idol sits at your chest height when you are seated
  • Bell 1

✓ Preparation

  • ✿ Bathe and wear clean clothes — red or yellow if you have them
  • ✿ Clean the puja space and draw the muggu before the idol is set down
  • ✿ Lay every item out on one tray in offering order — the puja should never pause while something is hunted for
  • ✿ Keep the nirmalya plate and a hand cloth within arm’s reach of where you will sit
  • ✿ Silence the phone: sankalpam to aarti is meant to be one unbroken sitting
  • ✿ ⚠️ Avoid looking at the moon after sunset on this day

🕐 The whole observance, hour by hour

The clock below is relative — count backwards from your own Chaturthi day. Nothing here is a muhurtam except the madhyahna window itself.

Two days before
Buy the clay idol while there is still a choice, and ask for plain unpainted clay. Buy rice rava, jaggery, a fresh coconut, moong and chana dal, betel leaves and nuts, camphor, ghee and cotton wicks at the same time — these sell out locally on the eve.
The day before
Clean the puja space and the chowki, cut the new cloth, and check that you have matches, a spoon, a water cup and a spare plate. Ask around for any patri you are short of; between a few neighbours and the local temple, most of the twenty-one are within walking distance.
The evening before
Draw the muggu. Wrap the leaves you have already gathered in a damp cloth and keep them in the coolest part of the house so they are not limp by morning. The dals are soaked in the morning, not tonight.
From sunrise
Bathe and change. Cut the durva and the flowers fresh. Steam the undrallu now, so the naivedya is still warm. Lay the whole tray out in offering order.
The main puja
Start the main puja inside madhyahna kala — 11:14 AM – 1:46 PM IST at Hyderabad, shifting up to about half an hour either way for your own city. Allow roughly two hours from the sankalpam to the aarti; the whole vidhanam below fits inside that comfortably once the tray is laid out.
After the aarti
Distribute prasadam to everyone present. Let the lamps burn out on their own rather than blowing them out. The idol stays where it is, undisturbed, with a light near it at night.
After sunset
Do not look at the moon. If somebody does, the katha read twenty-one times the same night is the traditional prayaschitta.
Visarjana day
Keeping the idol for one day, three, five, nine or eleven is a household choice, not a rule — the shorter observance is not a lesser one. Whichever you keep, the leave-taking in step 10 is identical.

🎯 Step-by-Step Vidhanam

Sanskrit mantras · Telugu transliteration · English meaning · Ganesha Purana · Bhavishya Purana · Skanda Purana (Ganesha Khanda) · Bodhayana Grihya Sutra · Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham paddhati

Step 1

Ganesh Idol Installation + Sankalpam

⏱ 10–12 minutes

Transliteration

Mama upatta samasta duritakshaya dvara Sri Mahaganapati prityartham Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthyam Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vratam karishye

Meaning

"For destruction of sins and pleasure of Sri Mahaganapati, on this Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi I undertake the Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vratam."

What you actually do
  1. 1. Face east or north-east. Spread the red cloth on the chowki and set the idol on it, at your chest height when you are seated.
  2. 2. Light the two ghee lamps — the right one first, then the left — and the agarbathi. They stay lit until the aarti.
  3. 3. Sit on a mat rather than the bare floor, with the water cup and spoon on your right and the nirmalya plate in front.
  4. 4. Sip water three times for achamanam, saying Om Keshavaya Svaha, Om Narayanaya Svaha, Om Madhavaya Svaha, and wipe your hand.
  5. 5. Take akshata, one flower and a little water in the right palm, cover it with the left, and say the sankalpam mantra above — with your own name, gotra and the place you are sitting in.
  6. 6. Pour that water out into the plate. The vow is binding from that moment until the aarti is over.

Watch out: The sankalpam is the one place your own name is spoken aloud. Skip it and the rest becomes recitation rather than a vratam — say it out loud even if you say everything else silently.

Step 2

Prana Pratishtha (installing life in idol)

⏱ 3–4 minutes

Transliteration

Om Am Hrim Krom Yam Ram Lam Vam Sham Sham Sam Hom pranah iha pranah · jiva iha sthitah · sarvendriyani vangmanas tvak chakshuh shrotra jihva ghrana ihagatya sukham chiram tishthantu svaha

Meaning

"May the life-airs be here, may life reside here. May all sense-organs — speech, mind, skin, eyes, ears, tongue, nose — come and remain here in comfort for long." Touch idol with right hand + mantra.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Take a durva blade and a few grains of akshata in your right hand.
  2. 2. Touch the idol at the heart, then at the head, while the mantra above is said.
  3. 3. Sprinkle the akshata over the idol.
  4. 4. From here the idol is treated as a guest in the house: it is not moved, not turned away from, and not left in a dark room until visarjana.

Watch out: A metal or silver Ganesha already worshipped daily at home needs neither avahana nor prana pratishtha, and at the end it is given utthapana — a formal raising — rather than immersion. This step is for a newly bought idol.

Step 3

Dhyana + Avahana + Asana

⏱ 4–5 minutes

Transliteration

Shuklambaradharam Vishnum Shashivarnam Chaturbhujam · Prasannavadanam dhyayet sarvavighnopashantaye

Meaning

"White-clothed, all-pervading, moon-hued, four-armed, pleasant-faced Ganesha — meditated for the peaceful removal of all obstacles."

What you actually do
  1. 1. Sit still with your eyes closed for a few breaths and hold the form in mind while the dhyana verse is said.
  2. 2. Make the avahana mudra — both palms joined, both thumbs folded inwards — and invite Ganesha into the idol.
  3. 3. Take five flowers in anjali, both palms cupped together, and set them down in front of the idol as the seat.

Watch out: Avahana comes before any offering. In the paddhati, water or cloth or food given before the deity has been invited is given to nobody.

Step 4

Shodashopachara Puja (16 upachara)

⏱ 30–40 minutes

Transliteration

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah (with each of 16 upacharas)

Meaning

The 16 traditional offerings. Chant bija mantra "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" with each. Red hibiscus preferred.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Keep three things in reach before you begin: the water cup, the nirmalya plate, and the tray of items in offering order.
  2. 2. Offer each upachara with the right hand, saying Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, then the name of that offering ending in samarpayami.
  3. 3. Pour every water offering over the idol or into the plate beside it, never onto cloth or paper.
  4. 4. Work straight down the table below. Nothing is skipped for being unavailable — offer a few akshata in its place and say the name.
The sixteen upacharas in the order used by the Telugu Vinayaka Vratha Kalpam, with what is offered and what your hands actually do.
#UpacharaWhat is offeredWhat you do
PadyamWater for the feetPour a spoonful of plain water at the base of the idol.
ArghyamScented water for the handsAdd a pinch of sandal and a few akshata to the water, then pour it from the spoon into the plate.
AchamaniyamWater for sippingOne spoonful offered at the mouth of the idol and allowed to fall into the plate.
4స్నానం · SnanamThe bath — plain water, then panchamrita, then clean waterMilk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar are offered in that order if you are doing the full bath. For a clay idol do the whole bath symbolically, with a durva blade dipped in water and touched to the idol — clay dissolves.
VastramCloth, and an upper clothLay the small new cloth across the shoulders of the idol; the uttariya follows it.
YajnopavitamThe sacred threadPlace it over the left shoulder so that it falls to the right hip.
GandhamSandal pasteApply with the ring finger of the right hand — forehead first, then the trunk.
8పుష్పం · PushpamFlowers, shami leaf, durva and sinduraGarland first, then a shami leaf, then durva in clusters of three or five leaflets laid on the head, then vermilion as a tilak. The twenty-one patri of step 6 belong here.
DhupamIncenseLight it and wave it three times in a small clockwise circle at the level of the chest, then set it down on the right.
DeepamThe lampWave the ghee lamp twice at the face. Rinse your hand with a spoonful of water afterwards — the lamp is not touched to the offerings.
NaivedyamThe food offeringSet the plate in front of the idol, sprinkle water around it in a circle, and offer it. Sandal mixed with water follows, for the hands.
TambulamBetel leaves, nuts, coconut and dakshinaTwo betel leaves, one nut, a coconut and a coin placed together to the right of the plate.
NeerajanamCamphor aartiCircle the lit camphor three times before the face and once at the feet, then take the warmth of the flame to your eyes.
MantrapushpamThe closing handful of flowersStand with the flowers in cupped palms, say the mantrapushpa, and place them at the feet.
PradakshinaCircumambulationTurn on the spot from left to right, three times. Ganesha pradakshina is done in place, not walked around the room.
NamaskaramThe prostrationA full namaskaram, in the form your family follows.

Published lists of the sixteen differ in where they begin and end. Drik Panchang counts from avahana and pratishthapana and closes at nirajana, folding pradakshina and namaskara into the conclusion; the Telugu kalpam followed on this page does avahana and asana earlier, as step 3, which leaves room for pradakshina and namaskara inside the sixteen. The same acts are performed either way — only the counting boundary moves.

Watch out: The right hand offers; the left holds the vessel or rings the bell. Offerings are laid down, never handed over or thrown, and used offerings go into the nirmalya plate rather than back onto the tray.

Step 5

Ganesh Ashtottara Shatanamavali

⏱ 12–15 minutes

Sanskrit

(108 total)

Transliteration

Om Vinayakaya Namah · Om Vighnarajaya Namah · Om Gauriputraya Namah · Om Ganeshvaraya Namah · Om Skandagrajaya Namah · Om Avyayaya Namah · Om Putaya Namah · Om Dakshadhyakshaya Namah... (108 total)

Meaning

The 108 names. Each is a facet: Vinayaka (Leader-without-superior), Vighnaraja (King of obstacles), Son-of-Gauri, Lord-of-ganas, elder-of-Skanda, undying, pure, president-of-ritual-perfection, etc.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Keep a plate of akshata mixed with a little kumkum, and a pile of red petals, in front of you.
  2. 2. Say each name and, on the word namah, drop a pinch of akshata or one petal onto the idol.
  3. 3. If you do not have all 108 printed, Om Gam Ganapataye Namah repeated 108 times on a mala is the accepted substitute.
  4. 4. Do not count out loud. Let the mala, or the shrinking pile of akshata, do the counting.

Watch out: Archana means the name and the offering land together — one name, one petal. Reading all 108 first and offering the flowers afterwards is a different act.

Step 6

Ekavimshati Patra Puja (21-leaves offering)

⏱ 15–20 minutes

Transliteration

Sumukhaya Namah Machi-patram samarpayami · Ganadhipaya Namah Brihati-patram samarpayami · Umaputraya Namah Bilva-patram samarpayami · Gajananaya Namah Durva-patram samarpayami... (21 total)

Meaning

Offer each of 21 sacred leaves with a corresponding name of Ganesha. This is UNIQUE to Vinayaka Chavithi (not done in daily Ganesh puja). If some leaves unavailable, tulsi + durva substitute the missing ones.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Wash the leaves and lay them out in offering order on a plate before you begin. Hunting for a leaf mid-mantra breaks the sequence.
  2. 2. Take one leaf at a time in the right hand, say the name with patram samarpayami, and lay it on the idol — head and shoulders first, working downwards.
  3. 3. Durva goes on last and stays there: twenty-one blades, in clusters of three or five leaflets, undivided.
  4. 4. The leaves remain on the idol until visarjana. They are not cleared away with the rest of the nirmalya at the end of the puja.

Watch out: Leaves are laid, never thrown, and never offered with the left hand. Set a torn or insect-eaten leaf aside — offer a whole one, or fall back to the tulsi and durva substitution above.

Step 7

21 Undrallu Naivedya

⏱ 10 minutes to offer · about an hour to cook

Transliteration

Om Modakapriyaya Namah · Sri Mahaganapataye 21 modakam / undrallu samarpayami

Meaning

"Salutations to the modaka-loving one. I offer 21 undrallu (kudumulu — steamed rice-flour dumplings with jaggery-coconut filling) to Sri Mahaganapati." Traditional Telugu Vinayaka Chavithi naivedya.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Steam the undrallu in the morning, before the puja, so the offering goes to the idol warm.
  2. 2. Count twenty-one into the offering plate. The rest of the batch stays outside the puja room until the naivedya is done.
  3. 3. Place the plate in front of the idol, sprinkle water around it in a circle, and offer it with the mantra above.
  4. 4. Leave the plate untouched through the aarti. It becomes prasadam only after the aarti and the kshama prarthana.

How to make undrallu (kudumulu) — the savoury and the sweet

Both versions are offered on Chavithi and households do not agree on which is the correct one. Published recipes also disagree on how much water a cup of rice rava takes, so the ranges below are real ranges, not vagueness — start at the tighter end and add a splash if the rava is still hard.

  • Savoury undrallu — soak 2 tablespoons of chana dal for 15 to 30 minutes and drain.
  • Bring the water to a rolling boil with salt and a teaspoon of ghee. Reckon 2 to 2½ cups of water per cup of rice rava at the tighter end, up to 3 cups at the looser end.
  • Temper cumin and the drained dal in ghee and tip that into the boiling water.
  • Stream the rice rava in with one hand while stirring with the other so it does not lump. Cover and cook on low until the water is taken up, about five minutes, then switch off and rest it covered for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Grease your palms with ghee, or wet them, and roll while the dough is still warm — it cracks once it cools.
  • Steam for 8 to 10 minutes on high. A small pan takes about six minutes, a full cooker plate about ten. They are done when the surface turns glossy and a finger no longer sticks.
  • Sweet bellam undrallu — soak 2 tablespoons of moong dal for 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Use 1 cup of rice rava to 3 cups of water. Boil the water with the dal, half a cup of grated jaggery, about 3 tablespoons of fresh grated coconut and half a teaspoon of cardamom until the jaggery dissolves.
  • Add the rava in a stream, cover, and cook on low for 7 to 8 minutes. Rest, shape, and steam 8 to 10 minutes on medium-high.
  • If you use rice flour instead of rice rava, drop the water to about 2¼ cups — flour takes up less than rava does.
  • Dough too dry and the dumplings crack as you roll them; too wet and they flatten in the steamer. Fix a dry dough with a spoonful of hot water and a wet one with a spoonful of dry rava and two more minutes covered.

Watch out: Undrallu are tasted only after the naivedya. Cooks traditionally check the seasoning on a portion set aside before any of it is counted into the offering plate.

Step 8

Vinayaka Chavithi Katha Reading

⏱ 10–12 minutes

Transliteration

Sri Vinayaka Vrata Katha · Sri Krishna-Chandra-Syamantaka Katha

Meaning

Recite the traditional katha: how Chandra laughed at Ganesha, was cursed, and how Krishna's Syamantaka gem trouble was resolved through this puja. The KATHA IS THE HEART of the vratam — never skip.

What you actually do
  1. 1. Everyone in the house sits down for this. The katha is meant to be heard, not read privately.
  2. 2. Hold akshata in your right hand throughout the reading.
  3. 3. At the end, drop that akshata on your own head rather than on the idol — the fruit of the hearing is taken on yourself.
  4. 4. If anybody did see the moon, the same katha read twenty-one times is the traditional remedy, and it is done the same night.

Watch out: The katha is the vratam. A Chavithi puja with every mantra correct and no katha is, in the Telugu kalpam, an incomplete vratam.

Step 9

Aarti + Mantra Pushpam + Kshama

⏱ 8–10 minutes

Marathi

Transliteration

Sukhakarta Dukhaharta varta vighnachi · Nurvi purvi prem krupa jayachi · Sarvangi sundara uti shendurachi · Kanthi zhalake mala muktaphalanchi

Meaning

Classical Ganesh aarti (Sukhakarta Dukhaharta). "Doer of joy, remover of sorrow, one who dispels news of obstacles..."

What you actually do
  1. 1. Light camphor on the aarti plate. Circle it three times before the face, once at the feet, and once around the whole form.
  2. 2. Sing the aarti standing — plate in the right hand, bell in the left.
  3. 3. Carry the flame around everyone present; each person takes the warmth to their eyes with both palms.
  4. 4. Cup flowers in both palms for mantra pushpam and place them at the feet.
  5. 5. Say the kshama prarthana for whatever was done wrongly or left out, and only then distribute prasadam.

Sukhakarta Dukhaharta — the complete aarti

Sukhakarta Dukhaharta is a Marathi abhanga composed by Sant Ramdas (1608–1682) and sung in raga Jogiya. The four lines in the box above are its opening stanza. The whole aarti is below, and the dhrupad is sung again after each stanza.

Sukhakarta dukhaharta, varta vighnanchi. Nuravi; puravi prema, krupa jayachi. Sarvangi sundara, uti shendurachi. Kanthi zhalake mala, muktaphalanchi.

Maker of happiness, remover of sorrow — of obstacles he leaves not even news behind. He fills us with love, and the grace is his. Beautiful in every limb, smeared with vermilion paste, a garland of pearls glinting at his throat.

Jaya deva, jaya deva jaya mangalamurti. Darshanamatre mana kamana purati.

Victory to you, victory to you, victory to Mangalamurti — at the mere sight of you the desires of the mind are fulfilled. (This is the dhrupad, the refrain, and it returns after every stanza.)

Ratnakhachita phara, tuja gaurikumara. Chandanachi uti, kumkuma keshara. Hirejadita mukuta, shobhato bara. Runajhunati nupure, charani ghagariya. Jaya deva jaya deva jaya mangalamurti.

Jewel-studded is your crest, O son of Gauri; sandal paste upon you, kumkum and saffron. A diamond-set crown sits well on you, and anklets with little bells murmur at your feet.

Lambodara pitambara, phanivarabandhana. Sarala sonda, vakratunda trinayana. Dasa Ramacha, vata pahe sadana. Sankati pavave, nirvani rakshave, suravaravandana. Jaya deva jaya deva, jaya mangalamurti. Darshanamatre manakamana purati.

Broad-bellied, yellow-robed, girded by the king of serpents; straight trunk, curved tusk, three-eyed one. Ramdas, your servant, waits at his house for you. Come to us in calamity, protect us at the very end, you whom the gods themselves salute.

Watch out: The aarti is sung standing and, wherever possible, together. It is the one part of the vidhanam the whole household is expected to be present for.

Step 10

Visarjana (if clay idol)

⏱ 15–20 minutes

Transliteration

Yantu devaganah sarve pujamadaya parthivim · Ishtakamyartha siddhyartham punaragamanaya cha

Meaning

"May all divine hosts, having received earthly worship, depart — and return for the fulfillment of desires." Visarjana in flowing water (river/pond) or a house kalasha (eco-friendly option).

What you actually do
  1. 1. Do a short final puja on the day of the immersion: lamp, akshata, a flower, the aarti, and the mantra above.
  2. 2. Take the leaves, flowers and the raksha sutra off the idol. They go into the water with it.
  3. 3. Carry the idol yourself, on a plate or in both palms — never lifted by the trunk or the head.
  4. 4. Immerse it in flowing water, or in a bucket or drum of water at home, where plain clay dissolves within a few hours.
  5. 5. Pour that water into a plant or a garden bed the following day. It is not emptied into a drain.

Watch out: Painted and plaster-of-Paris idols do not dissolve, and they poison the water they are put into. If the idol is not plain clay, keep it and perform utthapana — a formal leave-taking using the same mantra — instead of immersing it.

🌿 The 21 Patri — Ekavimshati Patra Puja, Identified

Each leaf is placed at the idol's feet one at a time, with a line spoken as it is set down — the pattern shown in step 6 above: a name of Ganesha, then namah, then the leaf name followed by patram samarpayami. Rinse the leaves and pat them dry beforehand, and keep them on a separate plate in list order so the sequence is not broken mid-chant.

The twenty-one leaves of the Telugu Vinayaka Vratha Kalpam, in offering order, with the Telugu plant name and botanical identification for each.
# Ritual name Telugu plant Botanical English & notes
1 Machi దవనం · Davanam Artemisia pallens Davana / southernwood
Sources differ: the Telugu davanam is A. pallens, while north-Indian lists give A. vulgaris (mugwort).
2 Brihati వాకుడు · Vakudu Solanum indicum Indian nightshade
Also identified as S. virginianum (yellow-berried nightshade); the two are routinely interchanged in ritual lists.
3 Bilva మారేడు · Maredu Aegle marmelos Bael / stone apple
4 Durva గరిక · Garika Cynodon dactylon Bermuda grass
The only grass in the list and the easiest of the twenty-one to buy fresh; sold by weight at every market in the week before Chavithi.
5 Dattura ఉమ్మెత్త · Ummetta Datura metel Downy thorn apple
Poisonous if eaten — offered as a leaf only, never in naivedyam. Keep away from children.
6 Badari రేగి · Regi Ziziphus jujuba (syn. Z. mauritiana) Indian jujube / ber
7 Apamarga ఉత్తరేణి · Uttareni Achyranthes aspera Prickly chaff flower
8 Tulasi తులసి · Tulasi Ocimum tenuiflorum (syn. O. sanctum) Holy basil
Tulasi is normally withheld from Ganesha in daily worship; it appears here because the ekavimshati patri list expressly includes it.
9 Chuta మామిడి · Mamidi Mangifera indica Mango
10 Karavira గన్నేరు · Ganneru Nerium oleander (syn. N. indicum) Oleander
Every part is toxic. Offered as a leaf only; wash hands afterwards.
11 Vishnukranta విష్ణుక్రాంత · Vishnukranta Evolvulus alsinoides Dwarf morning glory
Some lists give Convolvulus pluricaulis instead; both are sold as shankhapushpi.
12 Dadimi దానిమ్మ · Danimma Punica granatum Pomegranate
13 Devadaru దేవదారు · Devadaru Cedrus deodara Himalayan cedar
Not native to the Telugu plains — most households substitute, or use a sprig from a dried puja packet.
14 Maruvaka మరువం · Maruvam Origanum majorana Marjoram
15 Sindhuvara వావిలి · Vavili Vitex negundo Five-leaved chaste tree / nirgundi
16 Jati జాజి · Jaji Jasminum grandiflorum Spanish jasmine
Appears in some lists under the name Sandhyapushpi.
17 Gandaki దేవకాంచనం · Devakanchanam Bauhinia variegata (syn. Phanera variegata) Orchid tree / kachnar
The least settled entry — also written Gandali, and one widely copied list gives only "latha durva", which is not a distinct plant.
18 Shami జమ్మి · Jammi Prosopis cineraria Khejri / shami
19 Ashvattha రావి · Ravi Ficus religiosa Peepal
20 Arjuna మద్ది · Maddi Terminalia arjuna Arjuna
21 Arka జిల్లేడు · Jilledu Calotropis gigantea (also given as C. procera) Giant milkweed
Milky sap irritates the eyes — do not rub your face after handling.

Which name goes with which leaf?

Which of the twenty-one names of Ganesha goes with which leaf is not fixed. Published paddhatis order the names differently, and the sources checked for this page did not agree with one another. Follow the sequence in your family's vratha kalpam book or your purohit's pothi — do not assume a list found online matches the one your family uses. The leaves themselves, and their order, are stable.

Why other lists look different

Two different sets of twenty-one leaves circulate, and each is correct within its own tradition. The list above is the Telugu Vinayaka Vratha Kalpam set. Most of the plants are common to both lists under different names, but widely published north Indian lists leave out machi, mamidi, vishnukranta, danimma, jaji, vavili and ravi, and put bhringraj, sem, sindoor, tej patra, agastya, kadali and ketaki in their place. If a list you find elsewhere does not match this one, it is far more likely to be the north Indian set than a mistake.

If you cannot find all 21

Very few households in a city can gather all twenty-one. The traditional allowance is to offer what is available and make up the count with durva and tulasi, stating the substitution in the sankalpam. Eleven, or even three, offered with attention is accepted; the count is an ideal, not a condition of the vratam. Market-bought "patri packets" sold before Chavithi usually carry twelve to fifteen of these, with devadaru and vishnukranta the most commonly missing.

Handle these three with care

Three of the twenty-one — ummetta, ganneru and jilledu — are poisonous plants. They are offered as leaves only: never eaten, never added to the naivedyam, and never left within a child's reach. Wash your hands after handling jilledu, whose milky sap irritates the eyes.

Sequence cross-checked against hindupad.com (Ekavimsathi Patra list) and telugupanchangamdaily.com (Vinayaka Vratha Kalpam); the contrasting north Indian set is drikpanchang.com's 21-patra list. Botanical identifications follow the names given by those sources, with disagreements noted in the table rather than resolved silently.

🍯 Naivedya (Food Offering)

Main: Undrallu / Kudumulu (21 count for Chaturthi) — steamed rice-flour dumplings with jaggery + freshly grated coconut + cardamom filling. Called modaka in Sanskrit. Traditional Telugu preparation: rava (semolina) can substitute rice flour. Cook in ghee, add water + jaggery, steam.

Others: Motichoor laddu · Modaka substitutes if undrallu unavailable · Payasam (kheer) · Fresh fruits (banana, coconut) · Panchamrita · Vada / garelu (savoury balance)

📿 Regional & Sampradaya Variations

Andhra: 5-11 day festival with elaborate Rakhini/Chatti festivities. Maharashtra: Lokmanya Tilak established 11-day public Ganesh Chaturthi in 1893. Karnataka: often combined with Gauri Habba (Parvati worship). Tamil Nadu: Vinayakar Chaturthi with kolukattai (rice-flour dumplings similar to undrallu). Kanchi tradition: 21 patra puja considered essential; Sringeri: emphasis on Ganesha Atharvashirsha recitation.

❓ FAQ

Why should we not look at the moon on Vinayaka Chavithi?

Per Vinayaka Vrata Katha, Chandra was cursed by Ganesha on this day: whoever sees moon on Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi shall face false accusations. Even Krishna faced the Syamantaka gem accusation after glimpsing. If accidentally seen, recite the katha 21 times as prayaschitta.

How many days is Vinayaka Chavithi celebrated?

Andhra tradition: 5, 9, or 11 days with visarjana on final day. Maharashtra: 11 days (traditional 1½ was extended by Lokmanya Tilak). Karnataka: often 3 days. Home-based observance: 1 day (Chaturthi only) is completely acceptable.

Do I really need 21 undrallu, 21 durva, 21 leaves?

The number 21 is traditional (multiples of 3 sacred to Ganesha). If unable to arrange all 21 of each, use 11 or even 3. Sincere devotion matters more than exact count. Substitutions (tulsi for missing leaves) are allowed with sankalpa noting the substitution.

Can I use a permanent brass/silver Ganesha instead of clay?

Yes, especially for annual observance without visarjana. Traditional preference is clay (dissolved in water = Ganesha returns to elements, eco-friendly). Permanent Ganesha is fine for daily worship year-round.

Best muhurtam for Vinayaka Chavithi 2026?

Madhyahna kala (mid-day: 11:14 AM – 1:46 PM IST, Hyderabad) is traditional per classical texts. Sunrise-to-noon window is also valid. Avoid Rahu kalam of the day (check /panchangam/ for your city).

Can menstruating women perform the puja?

Traditional view varies by family. Modern conservative view: mental prayer + katha listening from a distance. Progressive view: no physical restriction. Consult your family purohit.

What if my clay idol accidentally breaks before visarjana?

Not inauspicious. Complete the puja as planned, then perform visarjana of the broken pieces in flowing water with sankalpa asking Ganesha's pardon. Ganesha is known as ashutosha (easily pleased).

Should the whole family fast?

Traditional: partial fast (no onion/garlic, single meal until after puja). Children and elderly exempted. Focus on sincerity over strict fasting.

Disclaimer: This guide is for personal home festival observance. For temple-scale rituals or first-time performance of complex ceremonies, consult a qualified Vedic pandit familiar with your family sampradaya. Regional and family customs vary widely; adapt as per your parampara.
