❓ FAQ

Why is Bilva leaf so important?

Bilva (bel) has 3 leaflets representing the three gunas, three eyes of Shiva, and destruction of sins of three births (past, present, future). Shiva Purana states one bilva leaf offered with devotion equals a full puja.

Which flowers should NEVER be offered to Shiva?

Ketaki (screwpine) — cursed by Shiva per Shiva Purana. Champaka is also traditionally avoided. Datura and bilva are most auspicious.

Do I have to do full abhishekam or is water enough?

Water alone (jala abhishekam) is completely valid — Shiva is called ashutosha (easily pleased). Milk, panchamrita etc. are enhancements when available. Never skip water.

Why only half pradakshina for Shiva Lingam?

Shiva Lingam has the gomukhi (drainage channel for abhishekam water). Crossing this line is considered inauspicious — it channels the "used" holy water. So devotees do half circle, return the other way.

When is the best time on Pradosham day?

Pradosha kaal — approximately 1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after sunset on Trayodashi tithi. Sunset varies by location — check /panchangam/ for exact time in your city.

Can I perform Rudrabhishekam at home without pandit?

Simple abhishekam yes. Full Rudra Namakam Chamakam requires proper pronunciation — best learned or performed by a pandit initially. Om Namah Shivaya with abhishekam is a complete home practice.

Disclaimer: This guide is for personal daily home practice. For major life-ceremony rituals (marriage, upanayanam, first-time performances of complex vratams), please consult a qualified Vedic pandit familiar with your family's sampradaya. Regional and family customs vary.
