Main: Sapatha — traditional prasad: 1 measure of rava (semolina), 1 measure of banana (mashed), 1 measure of sugar, 1 measure of milk, 1 measure of ghee. Cook rava in ghee, add milk + sugar + banana. Offer to deity, then distribute.

Others: Panchamrita (milk + curd + ghee + sugar + honey) · Home-made sweets (any) · Fresh fruits

📿 Sampradaya Variations

This is the widely-followed Smartha sequence. Vaishnavas often add Vishnu Sahasranama recitation before the katha. Some Andhra families include Sri Suktam. Consult your family purohit for regional additions.

❓ FAQ

Can Satyanarayan Puja be performed at home without a pandit?

Yes. Traditionally it is a householder vratam. Follow the sequence honestly, recite the katha sincerely. A pandit is helpful for first-time performers but not mandatory.

Which day is best for Satyanarayan Vratam?

Pournami (full moon), Ekadashi, Sankaranti, or any auspicious day per your family tradition. Full moon is most classical.

Can women perform Satyanarayan Puja?

Yes, absolutely. Traditionally the whole family participates — men, women, and children.

Is fasting mandatory?

Traditionally yes (partial fast — no onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food from the previous evening). Water and fruits are allowed. If health does not permit, sincere intention matters more than strict fast.

What if I make a mistake in the mantras?

The Kshama Prarthana at the end (step 9) specifically asks forgiveness for such errors. Devotion outweighs perfection.

How many people should attend the puja?

Traditionally at least 5 receive prasad. Family + neighbors + close friends is standard.

Disclaimer: This guide is for personal daily home practice. For major life-ceremony rituals (marriage, upanayanam, first-time performances of complex vratams), please consult a qualified Vedic pandit familiar with your family's sampradaya. Regional and family customs vary.
