How Vedic muhurtam dates are calculated

Vedic muhurtam selection considers multiple factors together: nakshatra (birth star), tithi (lunar day), vara (weekday), karana, yoga, hora, and current planetary transits. Each ceremony has specific preferences — for example, marriage traditionally prefers certain nakshatras and avoids others. Our monthly calendars mark the most auspicious dates per classical texts.

Marriage — What to Look For in a Good Muhurtam

Marriage muhurtam (Vivah Muhurtam) is the most detailed of all muhurtas — classical texts specify preferred nakshatras (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati), preferred tithis (2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13 in either paksha), and avoided combinations (Amavasya, Chaturthi, Navami, Chaturdashi; Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha 1st pada, Jyeshtha, Mula 1st pada). Weekdays: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday preferred; Tuesday and Saturday generally avoided. Guru bala and Shukra bala (strength of Jupiter and Venus for both bride and groom) are additionally checked.

Common Questions About Marriage Muhurtam 2027

How is a marriage muhurtam different from a "shubh" date on a calendar?

A generic "shubh" mark on a wall calendar is a broad annual filter — it flags days that avoid major inauspicious combinations. A true muhurtam is a specific window (usually 24-96 minutes) computed for a specific ceremony, considering the family's gotra, the participants' birth nakshatras (particularly for bride and groom), current planetary transits, and the classical dos-and-don'ts for that ceremony type. Our monthly pages highlight the top general dates; for the exact window on a chosen day, consult a purohit.

If 2027 has no ideal marriage muhurtam, can we still proceed?

Yes — the classical texts always provide fallback options. If the ideal combination is unavailable, choose the least-conflicting date that has at least a favourable tithi and nakshatra, then perform preliminary remedies (specific homams, mantra chanting) to strengthen the muhurtam. Many families also use Abhijit Muhurta (a naturally auspicious mid-day window that falls every day around solar noon) when the specific date lacks a strong muhurta window. A qualified jyotishi can identify the best available date even in a difficult month.

Do the dates on this page account for regional (North / South Indian) differences?

Our muhurtam calendars follow the classical Vedic system (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Muhurta Chintamani) which is universal — the tithi, nakshatra, karana, yoga, and vara are astronomical facts computed identically across all regions. Regional differences arise in which ceremonies are performed at all (some rituals are more prominent in some regions), which classical text is preferred (Kerala tradition often follows Prashna Marga in addition), and local family customs. The core auspicious dates are the same across India; the ritual details may vary.
