Varalakshmi Vratam
7 August 2026 | Women's Vrat
Varalakshmi Vratam is one of the most important vratas observed by married women in South India to seek the blessings of Goddess Varalakshmi — the boon-granting form of Goddess Lakshmi. Worshipping her on this day is believed to be equivalent to worshipping all eight Lakshmis (Ashtalakshmi).
Significance
According to the Skanda Purana, Goddess Parvati taught this vrata to her devotees as Lord Shiva narrated it to her. The story tells of Charumati, a pious woman to whom Goddess Lakshmi appeared in a dream and instructed to perform this vrata. By doing so, Charumati and her family received boundless wealth, health, and happiness. The vrata grants the eight forms of wealth — Adi Lakshmi, Dhana Lakshmi, Dhanya Lakshmi, Gaja Lakshmi, Santana Lakshmi, Veera Lakshmi, Vijaya Lakshmi, and Vidya Lakshmi.
Date & Muhurtam
Varalakshmi Vratam in 2026 falls on Friday, 7 August, the second Friday before the full moon (Purnima) of Shravana month. The puja is performed in four lagnams: Simha Lagnam (morning, most auspicious for Telugu families), Vrischika Lagnam (afternoon), Kumbha Lagnam (evening), and Vrishabha Lagnam (night). Simha Lagnam between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM is considered the best.
Rituals & Traditions
Women wake early, clean the puja area, and draw rangoli with rice flour. A kalasham (sacred pot) is prepared with water, mango leaves, a coconut, turmeric, kumkum, and coins, symbolizing the goddess. The kalasham is decorated with a face, jewelry, and silk saree to represent Varalakshmi. Sixteen knots are tied in a yellow thread (toram) which is worshipped and tied to the right wrist. Offerings include payasam, vada, pulihora, sweet pongal, and fruits. The Varalakshmi Vrata Katha is read aloud.
Regional Variations
In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the vratam is performed with elaborate kalasha decoration and community gatherings where women exchange tamboolam (betel leaves, fruits, blouse pieces). In Tamil Nadu, it is called Varalakshmi Nombu and married women invite neighbors for sumangali prarthanai. Karnataka observes it with similar grandeur, often with golu-style displays. Maharashtra and parts of North India observe it as Jivantika or Jaya Parvati Vrat with regional variations.
Mantras & Prayers
పద్మాసనే పద్మకరే సర్వలోకైక పూజితే |
నారాయణ ప్రియే దేవీ సుప్రీతా భవ సర్వదా ||
O Goddess seated on the lotus, holding lotuses in your hands, worshipped by all the worlds, beloved of Narayana — be ever pleased with us and bestow your grace.
Fasting Rules
Married women (sumangalis) primarily observe this vrat. The fast begins at sunrise and is broken only after the puja and reading of the vrata katha. Devotees consume only fruits, milk, and prasad until the puja concludes. No grains, onion, garlic, or tamarind is consumed before the puja. After the puja, a satvik feast is shared with family. Unmarried girls may also observe the vrat for a good husband and prosperity.
About Varalakshmi Vratam (వరలక్ష్మీ వ్రతం)
Mythological Background
Varalakshmi Vratam is observed by married Hindu women on the second Friday (or Friday before Purnima) of Shravana month for the well-being and prosperity of their husbands and families. The Skanda Purana details its origin — Lord Shiva narrated the vrat to Goddess Parvati to bring the boon-granting (Vara) form of Lakshmi to married women. The defining story is that of Charumati, a virtuous woman of Kundinapuram who was visited in a dream by Lakshmi herself and instructed to perform this vrat. When Charumati did so the very next Friday, Lakshmi appeared and granted her family unending prosperity. The vrat thus became established as a Friday tradition.
Detailed Rituals and Observance
The vrat begins with Mangala Snanam (auspicious bath after applying turmeric and oil), wearing new or clean traditional clothing (preferably yellow or red), and preparing the puja altar. Kalasha Sthapana (sacred pot installation) is the central ritual — a brass or silver pot is filled with water, betel leaves, coins, turmeric, kumkum, and a coconut on top. The kalasha is decorated as Goddess Lakshmi with eyes, jewelry, and a face drawn on the coconut. Sankalpa (vow) is taken stating the date, deity, and purpose. Shodashopachara Puja (16-step worship) is performed: avahana, asana, padya, arghya, achamana, snana, vastra, yajnopaveeta, gandha, pushpa, dhupa, deepa, naivedya, tambula, neerajana, pradakshina-namaskara. The Vara Lakshmi Vrata Katha is recited or listened to. The vrat concludes with Aarti, 108 Lakshmi Gayatri recitations, and tambulam distribution to suvasinis (married women).
Regional Variations Across India
Most prominently observed in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. In Andhra-Telangana tradition, the kalasha is decorated as a goddess with face and ornaments — sometimes with a sari draped around it. In Karnataka, it is sometimes called Vara Mahalakshmi Vratam. Tamil Nadu observes it as Varalakshmi Nombu, often with elaborate kolams (rangoli) at the entrance. Maharashtra observes a related Mahalakshmi Vrata in Bhadrapada. The vrat is uniquely a married women's observance — unmarried women observe related but distinct vows.
Mantras and Prayers
Vara Lakshmi Vrata Katha (the Charumati story). Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanama Stotra (108 names of Lakshmi). Sri Suktam — the most powerful Lakshmi prayer from the Rigveda Khila. Lakshmi Gayatri Mantra: "Om Mahalakshmyai Cha Vidmahe Vishnupatnyai Cha Dheemahi Tanno Lakshmi Prachodayat" (108 times). Lakshmi Mool Mantra: "Om Hreem Shreem Lakshmyai Namah".
