Why observe Krishna Janmashtami?
Sri Krishna's birth anniversary — the descent of the Supreme (as per Bhagavad Gita 4.7-4.8: "Yada yada hi dharmasya..."). Observed with fasting, midnight puja, jhulan-seva (rocking baby Krishna). Per Bhagavata Purana 10.3, Krishna was born at midnight of Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami under Rohini nakshatra. Observance is said to grant liberation and all worldly boons.

❓ FAQ
▸ What time should the main puja happen?
Nishita kala (midnight, approximately 11:45 PM – 12:30 AM IST). This coincides with Krishna's actual birth moment per Bhagavata Purana. Puja preparations from evening 6:30 PM onward.
▸ Is nirjala (waterless) fast mandatory?
Traditional: nirjala until midnight break-fast. Modern practical: phalahara (fruits + milk + water) is acceptable. Health-first: elderly, pregnant women, children exempted. Sincere devotion + reading Bhagavatam matters more than strict fasting.
▸ Should the fast be broken at midnight or next morning?
Family variation. Traditional Vaishnava: break fast at midnight after puja completion (with panchamrita + sweet prasad). Some families continue fast till next morning's sunrise (extending 2-day observance for Rohini nakshatra timing).
▸ What if I do not have a Bala Krishna idol?
Not mandatory. A Krishna photo, or an image of baby Krishna, or even a small round stone wrapped in yellow cloth (representing Krishna) can substitute. Focus is on midnight observance + katha reading + jhula-seva.
▸ Why is butter (venna) so important?
Baby Krishna's famous "butter-thief" leela — stealing butter from Yashoda + gopis' pots. Offering butter recreates this beloved Krishna-play. Also, home-churned butter is considered the purest naivedya for Vaishnava tradition.
▸ Can we celebrate Janmashtami on 3rd or 4th September 2026?
Traditional debate: Ashtami tithi + Rohini nakshatra confluence is ideal. For 2026, most Smartha panchangams observe on Thursday 3 September 2026 (Ashtami peak). Some Vaishnava traditions observe on 4 September (Rohini nakshatra prominence). Consult /panchangam/ for your specific tradition.
▸ What is Dahi Handi and should I do it at home?
Dahi Handi (breaking of butter/curd pot suspended high) is a public Maharashtrian tradition mimicking Krishna's butter-stealing. Not part of home puja — but children may enjoy a symbolic version at home.
▸ Can non-Vaishnavas celebrate Krishna Janmashtami?
Yes — Krishna is universally worshipped across all Hindu traditions. Smartha, Vaishnava, and even devotional practices in Shaiva homes observe Janmashtami with fasting + Bhagavatam recitation.
