Hanuman Jayanti

11 April 2026 | Devotional Festival

Hanuman Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the mighty monkey-god, devoted servant of Lord Rama, and embodiment of strength, devotion, and selfless service. It is one of the most cherished festivals across India, marked by the chanting of the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundara Kanda.

Significance

Hanuman, son of Vayu (the wind god) and Anjana, is revered as the eleventh Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva. His unwavering devotion to Sri Rama, his role in the Ramayana — especially in finding Sita and burning Lanka — and his extraordinary strength make him the supreme example of bhakti (devotion). Worshipping Hanuman is believed to remove fear, grant courage, eliminate obstacles, and shield devotees from negative influences and planetary doshas, particularly Saturn's adverse effects.

Date & Muhurtam

In 2026, Hanuman Jayanti falls on Saturday, 11 April, on the Chaitra Purnima (full moon of Chaitra month) according to the North Indian and Telugu tradition. The Purnima tithi prevails through sunrise — the most auspicious time for puja is Brahma Muhurtam (4:30 AM to 6:00 AM) and during sunrise. Tamil Nadu and Kerala observe Hanuman Jayanti in the month of Margashirsha (December–January).

Rituals & Traditions

Devotees wake before sunrise, take a holy bath, and visit Hanuman temples. Sindoor (vermilion) mixed with jasmine oil is applied to the deity, as Hanuman is said to love sindoor. Recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses by Tulsidas), Sundara Kanda, Bajrang Baan, and Hanuman Ashtak is performed. Offerings include vada malas (garlands of urad dal vadas), bananas, jaggery, betel leaves, and tulsi. Many devotees observe a full-day fast and read the entire Sundara Kanda.

Regional Variations

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a 41-day Hanuman Deeksha culminates on this day with devotees in red-orange dhotis visiting Hanuman temples. In Tamil Nadu, Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in the month of Margazhi as Hanumath Jayanti. Karnataka observes it in Vaishakha. In Maharashtra, it falls on Chaitra Purnima with grand processions. North Indian devotees organize akhand path of Hanuman Chalisa and community feasts.

Mantras & Prayers

I bow my head to the messenger of Sri Rama — swift as the mind, fast as the wind, master of the senses, foremost among the wise, son of the wind god, and chief of the vanara army.

Fasting Rules

Devotees observe a Nirjala (waterless) or Phalahar (fruits and milk only) vrat from sunrise to evening. Grains, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food are strictly avoided. The fast is broken after evening puja with prasad of vada, jaggery, and bananas. Married women, men seeking strength and protection, and children studying for exams especially observe this vrat. Reading the Hanuman Chalisa 11, 21, or 108 times during the fast is considered highly meritorious.

About Hanuman Jayanti (హనుమాన్ జయంతి)

Mythological Background

Hanuman Jayanti commemorates the birth of Lord Hanuman, the eleventh Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva, born to Anjana and Kesari with the divine blessing of Vayu (the wind god). Hanuman is celebrated as the embodiment of bhakti (devotion), seva (selfless service), and brahmacharya (celibate strength). The Sundarakanda of the Ramayana details his courage in crossing the ocean to find Sita in Lanka, his strength in burning Lanka, and his devotion to Lord Rama. Hanuman is considered chiranjeevi (immortal), eternally present wherever the Ramayana is recited.

Detailed Rituals and Observance

Devotees observe a fast from dawn to dusk on Hanuman Jayanti, breaking it after evening Hanuman puja. Traditional offerings include vada (urad dal fritters), banana, jaggery, sindoor (vermillion), and coconut. The 40-day Mandala Vrata starting on Hanuman Jayanti is observed by many — visiting a Hanuman temple daily and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. Sindoor application on the Hanuman idol is unique — devotees apply sindoor mixed with mustard oil. Specific rituals include Sundarakanda Parayanam (full recitation of the Sundarakanda chapter), 108 recitations of the Hanuman Chalisa, and offering of paan (betel leaves with areca nut).

Regional Variations Across India

South India (Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu) observes Hanuman Jayanti on Chaitra Purnima (full moon of Chaitra month) — typically March-April. North India observes it on Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi (October-November), believed to be the day Hanuman met Sita and Rama in his current form. Maharashtra observes both dates. Karnataka has a unique 41-day Hanumantha Vrata. Telangana's Karmanghat Hanuman Temple sees ~200,000 devotees on Hanuman Jayanti. Andhra's Yadagirigutta and Kondagattu Anjaneya temples are major destinations.

Mantras and Prayers

Hanuman Chalisa (40 verses by Tulsidas) — most popular Hanuman prayer. Bajrang Baan for protection. Hanuman Ashtaka for relief from troubles. Sundarakanda Parayanam (24 sargas) for blessings. Ram Raksha Stotra often recited before Hanuman puja. The Hanuman Mool Mantra: "Om Hum Hanumate Namaha" recited 108 times daily.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there two Hanuman Jayanti dates in different regions?

South India follows the tradition that Chaitra Purnima is the day of Hanuman's birth. North India follows the tradition that Kartika Krishna Chaturdashi is the day Hanuman accepted his current form to meet Rama after Sita's rescue. Both are valid in their respective regions.

What is the puja vidhi for Hanuman Jayanti at home?

Take a bath, wear clean clothes (preferably orange/saffron), set up a small altar with Hanuman idol/picture, offer red flowers and sindoor mixed with oil, light ghee diya, recite the Hanuman Chalisa 11 or 108 times, offer naivedyam of vada/banana/jaggery, distribute prasadam, and observe fast until evening.

Can women perform Hanuman puja?

Yes. The traditional restriction (women not touching the Hanuman idol due to his brahmacharya status) is observed in some temples but home puja by women is universally practiced. Distance is sometimes maintained from the idol but full devotion is welcomed.
