Dussehra / Vijayadashami

18 October 2026 | Major Festival

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, marks the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana, and Goddess Durga over Mahishasura. It celebrates the triumph of good over evil, righteousness over adharma, and is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar.

Significance

Vijayadashami is celebrated for two great victories: Lord Rama killing Ravana to rescue Sita, and Goddess Durga vanquishing Mahishasura after a nine-day battle. The day is considered so auspicious that any new venture started on this day is believed to succeed. It also marks the day when the Pandavas retrieved their hidden weapons from the Shami tree after their year of incognito exile.

Date & Muhurtam

Vijayadashami in 2026 falls on Sunday, 18 October, the Dashami tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month. The Vijaya Muhurtam — the ideal time for new beginnings, weapon worship, and journeys — is between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM. Aparahna Kala (afternoon) is the traditional time for puja and Shami Puja.

Rituals & Traditions

Devotees perform Ayudha Puja (worship of tools, weapons, books, and vehicles), Shami Puja (worship of the Shami tree whose leaves are exchanged as gold), and Aparajita Puja. Children begin their education with Vidyarambham. In the evening, effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad are burned in massive public events. Devotees visit temples, exchange Shami leaves, and seek blessings from elders.

Regional Variations

In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Jammi Aaku (Shami leaves) are exchanged as a symbol of gold, and Palapitta (Indian Roller bird) sighting is considered very auspicious. Mysore Dasara in Karnataka is world-famous for its grand royal procession with caparisoned elephants. Tamil Nadu celebrates with Saraswati Puja and Ayudha Puja. North India organizes Ramlila plays for ten days ending with Ravana Dahan. West Bengal performs Durga Visarjan with sindoor khela.

Mantras & Prayers

శమీ శమయతే పాపం శమీ శత్రు వినాశినీ |
అర్జునస్య ధనుర్ధారీ రామస్య ప్రియదర్శినీ ||

The Shami tree destroys sins, vanquishes enemies, bore Arjuna's bow, and was beloved of Lord Rama. We invoke its sacred power on this Vijayadashami.

Fasting Rules

While Dussehra is primarily a celebration day, many devotees who observed Navratri vrat conclude their nine-day fast on this day with Kanya Puja and a satvik feast. Some observe a half-day fast until the afternoon Vijaya Muhurtam puja. Traditional foods like jilebi, fafda, and special sweets are prepared. The day is marked by feasting with family, exchanging sweets, and seeking blessings rather than strict fasting.

About Dussehra (Vijayadashami · దసరా)

Mythological Background

Dussehra (Vijayadashami) commemorates two distinct mythological events that fall on the same lunar date — the 10th day (Dashami) of Ashwija Shukla Paksha. In the Ramayana tradition, this is the day Lord Rama defeated Ravana after a 9-day battle (which Ramlila plays reenact across North India). In the Devi tradition, this is the day Goddess Durga defeated the buffalo-demon Mahishasura after a 9-day combat (which Sharad Navratri commemorates). The convergence of these two narratives makes Dussehra one of the most pan-Indian Hindu festivals, observed with regional variation but shared symbolism of dharma's victory over adharma.

Detailed Rituals and Observance

Dussehra rituals begin with Ayudha Puja on the 9th day (Mahanavami) — worship of one's tools, vehicles, weapons, and books. On Vijayadashami itself, specific observances include Aparajita Puja (worship of the unconquered Devi), Shami tree worship (commemorating the Pandavas' weapon retrieval after exile), and Vijaya Muhurtam crossing of village/town boundaries. Many begin new ventures, learning, or business activities only after Vijaya Muhurtam (the 10th muhurta of the day, ~36 minutes around solar noon). Traditional Brahmin households perform Saraswati Visarjan immersing the books worshipped during Navratri.

Regional Variations Across India

Mysuru Dasara (Karnataka) is the most spectacular celebration with the royal procession of Goddess Chamundeshwari atop a golden throne carried on an elephant — a 400-year tradition continued by the Wodeyar family. Kullu Dussehra (Himachal) brings 200+ village deities to Kullu valley for 7 days. Bengal's Durga Puja Visarjan happens on Vijayadashami evening. Tamil Nadu and Karnataka observe Bommai Kolu (doll display). Mewar/Udaipur celebrates Maharana Pratap's coronation. Western India burns Ravana effigies; Andhra-Telangana observes Saraswati Puja at home temples.

Mantras and Prayers

Aparajita Stotra: "Jaya Devi Bhagavati Bhadrakali..." Durga Saptashati 32 chapters recited during the 9 nights culminating on Dussehra. Vijaya Mantra: "Om Durge Smrita Harasi Bhitim Asesha Jantor..." Krishna offers Arjuna the Vijaya Mantra in Mahabharata Bhishma Parva. Sundarakanda recitation on Dussehra eve is traditional in Vaishnava households.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Vijaya Muhurtam on Dussehra 2026?

For Hyderabad on 20 October 2026, Vijaya Muhurtam falls approximately 11:48 AM - 12:34 PM IST (the 10th muhurta of the day, centered on solar noon). This is the universal auspicious window for starting any new venture. Exact timings vary by city.

What is Ayudha Puja and when is it performed?

Ayudha Puja is the worship of one's tools, vehicles, books, and weapons performed on Mahanavami (the 9th day), one day before Dussehra. It honors the principle that one's instruments deserve respect equal to the deity behind their use.

Is Dussehra and Vijayadashami the same?

Yes. Dussehra is the popular Hindi name; Vijayadashami is the Sanskrit/southern name. Both refer to the 10th lunar day of Ashwija Shukla Paksha. Tamil Nadu also calls it Saraswati Puja day.
