The eclipse forms when the Moon passes between Sun and Earth. In Vedic tradition, it is not merely an astronomical event but a karmic activation window along the Rahu-Ketu axis. Per Surya Siddhanta, both the eclipse nakshatra (position of Sun) and eclipse lagna (rising sign at eclipse moment) come into play.
· Why sutak is NOT observed
The traditional rule (Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Sringeri, Sri Vasavi Panchangam agree): if the eclipse is not visible in your region, sutak is not observed. Aug 12 begins at 21:04 IST — Sun has already set in India. Hence not observable here.
🕉 What if you want to observe anyway?
Some devotees still choose to observe:
- Chant your ishta-deva mantra during eclipse hours
- Avoid new-food preparation; consume leftover food only if strictly necessary
- Take a bath after 01:28 IST (eclipse end)
- Perform Rahu-Ketu shanti on the following weekday

▸ Is the August 12, 2026 solar eclipse visible in India?
No. The eclipse begins at 21:04 IST, when the Sun has already set in India. It is visible only in Iceland, Spain, and parts of North Atlantic.
▸ Should I observe sutak in India?
No. Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Sringeri, and Sri Vasavi Panchangam all agree: if the eclipse is not visible in your region, sutak is not observed. However, devout practitioners may still choose mantra practice during the eclipse hours (21:04–01:28 IST).
▸ Which rashi is most affected?
Simha (Leo) receives the most intense impact as the eclipse falls in own sign. The other 3 HIGH-impact rashis are Vrishabha (4th house), Kumbha (7th), and Vrischika (10th) — the kendra positions from Simha.
▸ What are Sutak timings if I choose to observe?
For solar eclipses, sutak begins 4 hours before the eclipse (that is, 17:04 IST on 12 Aug) and ends when the eclipse ends (01:28 IST on 13 Aug). Bath after 01:28 IST if observed.
▸ Are pregnant women affected differently?
Traditional practice recommends pregnant women stay indoors during eclipses regardless of local visibility, chant Aditya Hridayam, and avoid sharp objects. Modern medicine sees no physiological risk, but the tradition endures for its spiritual and precautionary value.
▸ What is the eclipse type?
Total Solar Eclipse (సంపూర్ణ సూర్యగ్రహణం). The total-phase path crosses Iceland and northern Spain — extremely rare for Europe.
▸ Where is the next eclipse visible in India?
A partial lunar eclipse on 28 August 2026 will be visible in India — just 16 days after this solar eclipse. That will observe traditional sutak rules.
▸ What mantras should I chant?
Aditya Hridayam Stotram (for Sun grace), Surya Gayatri, or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. For rashi-specific remedies see the "Remedies · పరిహారం" section under your rashi card above.
