Nakshatras — The 27 Lunar Mansions of Vedic Astrology

నక్షత్రాలు — వేద జ్యోతిష్యంలో 27 చంద్ర మండలాలు

By·Published

Nakshatras (నక్షత్రాలు) are the 27 lunar mansions that form one of the most distinctive features of Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra). The word Nakshatra comes from "Naks" meaning sky and "Tra" meaning to guard or protect — these are the guardians of the celestial sphere. Each nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac, and the Moon transits through all 27 in approximately 27.3 days.

Nakshatras in Daily Life

Your birth nakshatra (Janma Nakshatra) is determined by the Moon's position at the time of your birth. This is considered even more important than your Sun sign in Vedic astrology. Your nakshatra influences your personality, health, career tendencies, and relationship patterns.

Baby Naming by Nakshatra

In the Hindu tradition, babies are named based on their birth nakshatra. Each nakshatra has specific starting syllables assigned to it. For example, Ashwini nakshatra's syllables are Chu, Che, Cho, La : so a baby born under Ashwini might be named Chudamani or Lakshmi. This tradition ensures the name resonates with the cosmic energy present at birth.

Marriage Matching (Nakshatra Koota): Compatibility between prospective marriage partners is assessed by comparing their nakshatras. The system evaluates 8 factors (Ashta Koota) including Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoota, and Nadi, yielding a maximum score of 36 points. A score of 18 or above is generally considered compatible.

Nakshatras and Muhurtam

Different nakshatras are suited for different activities. For example, Rohini, Pushya, and Shravana are considered excellent for marriages. Ashwini is ideal for beginning journeys and medical treatments. Mrigashira is good for laying foundations. Knowing which nakshatra is active helps in selecting the right muhurtam for any event.

Nakshatras represent one of the most sophisticated astronomical observation systems developed in the ancient world. By tracking the Moon's journey through these 27 celestial segments, our ancestors created a framework that continues to guide millions in their daily decisions and life celebrations.
