Mulank (Birth Number) Calculator — Free Vedic Numerology

Quick Answer: Mulank (also called Birth Number or Root Number) is the single-digit reduction of your birth day (1-31). For example, if born on 15th, Mulank = 1+5 = 6. Mulank represents your core personality, ego, and innate tendencies. Each Mulank (1-9) corresponds to a ruling planet — Sun for 1, Moon for 2, Jupiter for 3, etc.

How Mulank is Calculated

Mulank uses only the day of your birth (1-31). Add the digits together; reduce to a single digit:

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Mulank calculated?
Mulank is the single-digit reduction of your day of birth (1-31). Examples: Born 1st → Mulank 1. Born 15th → 1+5 = 6 → Mulank 6. Born 29th → 2+9 = 11 → 1+1 = 2 → Mulank 2. Born 30th → 3+0 = 3 → Mulank 3. The month and year don't matter for Mulank.
Is Mulank more important than Bhagyank?
Both are important but serve different purposes. Mulank reveals your inherent ego and personality (how you naturally react). Bhagyank reveals your destiny and life path. For day-to-day decisions, Mulank matters more. For life direction and major decisions, Bhagyank matters more. Together they give a complete picture.
What if my Mulank is unlucky?
No Mulank is "unlucky" — each has strengths and challenges. If certain numbers feel unfavorable, you can: (1) Wear the corresponding gemstone, (2) Choose your important activities on the lucky day for your number, (3) Use the lucky color in your daily life. Avoid pure-yellow on a Saturday-ruled Mulank (8) day, etc. Subtle but consistent application matters.

About These Calculations

Our Vedic calculators use astronomical-grade ephemerides converted to sidereal positions via the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of India's official sidereal standard since the 1955 Saha Committee Calendar Reform. The Moon Sign (Chandra Rāśi) calculator computes the Moon's longitude using a simplified ELP-2000 lunar model, then subtracts the Lahiri Ayanamsa (currently ~24°13′) to get the sidereal position. Dividing the result by 30° gives the rāśi (sign).

Accuracy Note

For ~95% of dates the result matches the position computed by professional ephemerides (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri Ephemeris). For dates near rāśi boundaries (within 3° of a sign edge), we display a warning to verify with a Vedic astrologer — small algorithmic differences can place the Moon in the adjacent sign. Pure observational accuracy to the minute requires birth time and place precision.

Trust & Methodology

Calculation methodology reviewed by Pandit Ramachandra Sharma, Editorial Lead for Panchangam Methodology, against classical Sūrya Siddhānta and the modern Lahiri Ephemeris. For deeper reading on Lahiri's foundational work, see Lahiri Ayanamsa. For more Vedic tools, see all calculators.
