The twelve Jyotirlingas are spread from Somnath on the Gujarat coast to Rameshwaram at the southern tip, so almost nobody does them in one journey. Most people take them in groups of two or three over several years, and pick the dates around Pradosham and Maha Shivaratri, when Shiva temples keep extended darshan.

When to go
Pradosham — the thirteenth tithi of each fortnight, worshipped in the hour and a half before and after sunset — is the standard day for a Shiva darshan, and it comes twice a month. Maha Shivaratri is the largest of the year and also the most crowded; if the point of the trip is an unhurried darshan rather than the crowd, the Pradosham a week either side is the easier day.
Planning notes
- Kedarnath is seasonal. The shrine opens around Akshaya Tritiya and closes around Bhai Dooj, and the walk up is weather-dependent throughout — check the current year's opening dates with the Uttarakhand shrine board before booking anything else.
- Somnath, Nageshwar and Dwarka sit close together on the Saurashtra coast, as do Trimbakeshwar, Bhimashankar and Grishneshwar in Maharashtra. Pairing them is what keeps a Jyotirlinga yatra to a sane number of trips.
