Gantala Panchangam
గంటల పంచాంగం
Gantala Panchangam (literally "hour-by-hour panchangam") is the most widely-followed daily-reference Telugu almanac genre. The format provides muhurtam (auspicious time) data broken down hour-by-hour (gantalu) along with the standard panchanga limbs — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vara — making it the practical daily reference for muhurtam selection in Telugu Hindu households.

What "Gantala" Means
The Telugu word "gantalu" (గంటలు) means "hours." A Gantala Panchangam organizes its information not just day-by-day but hour-by-hour — listing the prevailing tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana for each hour-segment of the day, along with the rahukalam, yamagandam, and varjyam windows.
This hour-segmented format is what makes Gantala Panchangam the practical reference for selecting muhurtams — auspicious times for weddings, gruhapravesam, upanayanam, business openings, and travel.
Major Telugu Gantala Editions
- Mulugu Gantala Panchangam — by Brahmasri Mulugu Ramalingeswara Varaprasad Siddhanthi, one of the most-circulated modern editions
- Vavilla Gantala Panchangam — published by Vavilla Ramaswamy Sastrulu Sons, the original mass-print Telugu panchangam house
- Vaidika Vardhini Gantala Panchangam — vedic scholar tradition
- Chinta Gopi Sharma Panchangam — popular Telangana edition
- Pidaparthi Panchangam — older Telugu tradition
When Released
Telugu panchangams are released annually around Ugadi (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada — Telugu New Year, typically late March/early April). The new panchangam covers the upcoming samvatsara (named year — e.g., Vishwavasu, Parabhava, Plavanga). Reading the Ugadi Panchanga Sravanam at temples on Ugadi day is a major Telugu tradition.
Calculation System
Modern Telugu Gantala panchangams almost universally use Drik Ganita (modern astronomical) with Lahiri Ayanamsa. Some smaller-circulation editions still use older Vakya tables; these can show 5-15 minute discrepancies in sunrise and tithi-junction times.
