Nirnaya Sagar Panchang
निर्णयसागर पंचांग
Nirnaya Sagar Panchang, published by Nirnaya Sagar Press of Mumbai (founded 1864), is among the oldest continuously-published Marathi panchangs. The Nirnaya Sagar Press itself is historically significant as one of the first Indian presses dedicated to publishing classical Sanskrit literature in book form — the panchang is part of that scholarly tradition.

Nirnaya Sagar Press — A Pioneer
Nirnaya Sagar Press was founded in 1864 by Javaji Dadaji in Bombay (Mumbai). It became one of the first Indian presses dedicated to publishing classical Sanskrit literature in book form — printing Mahabharata, Ramayana, Upanishads, Puranas, and Dharma Shastra texts. The Press's decision to publish an annual panchang as part of its Sanskrit/Marathi catalog gave the Nirnaya Sagar Panchang its distinct scholarly authority.
Distinguishing Features
- Strong Dharma Shastra scholarly commentary
- Detailed nirnaya (decision) sections on disputed tithi observances
- Traditional Marathi Brahmin household reference
- Comprehensive vrata-niyama and parva (festival) explanations
How Nirnaya Sagar Panchang arrives at a date
Nirnaya Sagar Panchang is calculated using Traditional Surya Siddhanta corrected to Drik Ganita with Lahiri Ayanamsa. Drik Ganita means the positions of the sun and moon are computed for the moment being asked about, rather than read from the pre-computed mean-motion tables of the older Vakya method, and the Lahiri ayanamsa is the offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs that India adopted as its national standard. The Surya Siddhanta named alongside it is the lineage the method descends from, not how a current edition is computed.
That is the same basis the panchangam on this site is computed on, so the tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana published here are arrived at the same way. What this site does not do is reproduce Nirnaya Sagar Panchang: the figures here are computed for the date and place asked for, and no attempt is made to reconcile them with a printed edition.
Questions about Nirnaya Sagar Panchang
Can a festival fall on a different day in Nirnaya Sagar Panchang than on this site?
It can. The observance day is set by the tithi running at sunrise, and sunrise moves with longitude, so a tithi that begins in the hours either side of dawn can start before sunrise in Maharashtra and after sunrise somewhere else. An edition prepared for one region and a calculation made for another city then differ by a day on that observance while agreeing on everything around it.
Where can readers get Nirnaya Sagar Panchang?
Through Maharashtra bookstores, traditional Sanskrit publishers, libraries. A panchangam is an annual publication: a copy covers one samvatsara and is replaced each year rather than kept as a standing reference.
Does this site publish the dates printed in Nirnaya Sagar Panchang?
No. This page is a directory entry for a printed publication. Nirnaya Sagar Panchang is published by Nirnaya Sagar Press, Mumbai, prepared in Marathi and Sanskrit for readers in Maharashtra. The daily panchangam on this site is computed independently and is not a reproduction of Nirnaya Sagar Panchang or of any other printed edition.
