Panchangam — Five Limbs of Time in Vedic Tradition
The word Panchangam (pancha + anga = "five limbs") refers to the Hindu Vedic calendar that tracks five astronomical-spiritual elements daily. Together these five define the spiritual quality of every moment — whether it's auspicious for new beginnings, suitable for fasting, ideal for travel, or appropriate for solemn observances. Authentic panchangam computation uses the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of India's official standard.
The Five Limbs (Pancha Anga)
- Tithi — Lunar day (30 per lunar month: 15 Shukla + 15 Krishna). Determines vrat days, festival dates.
- Nakshatra — Lunar mansion (27 total, each 13°20'). Determines your janma nakshatra + daily nakshatra-based muhurat.
- Yoga — Sun-Moon angular relationship (27 yogas). Determines auspiciousness of the day.
- Karana — Half of a tithi (11 karanas). Vishti (Bhadra) is universally avoided.
- Vara — Weekday (7 days), each ruled by a planet. Determines daily worship deity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do panchangams vary slightly?
Most variation comes from ayanamsa choice — Lahiri (most common), Raman, KP, Krishnamurti, etc. Even within Lahiri, there are minor differences (~10 minutes) in tithi/nakshatra start-end times based on whether you compute for sunrise, true sunrise, or local apparent noon. We use Lahiri at sunrise (the most standard reference).
What's the difference between panchangam and rashi phalalu?
Panchangam = the daily calendar showing the 5 limbs (tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, vara) — applies to everyone equally. Rashi Phalalu = personal predictions based on your individual rashi (Moon sign) and how the day's planetary positions interact with your chart.
How is panchangam useful daily?
Use it to: 1) Avoid Rahu Kalam for important meetings; 2) Plan auspicious activities during Abhijit Muhurta; 3) Observe vrats on appropriate tithis (Ekadashi, Pradosham); 4) Know when festivals fall; 5) Check muhurat for any new beginning — purchase, travel, work start, ceremonies. Our Today's Panchangam shows all 5 elements computed for your city.
