The Kalnirnay Story

Jayantrao Salgaonkar (1929-2013) launched Kalnirnay in 1973 with a simple insight: Indian households needed a calendar that combined daily panchang information with festival listings, in a wall-friendly tear-off format. The first edition was Marathi-only and printed in modest quantity.

Over the next five decades, Kalnirnay expanded to 9+ language editions (Marathi, Hindi, English, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi) and became the largest-selling annual publication in India — with annual print runs in the tens of millions of copies. Today it is published by the Sapre Group, Mumbai, under Salgaonkar family stewardship.

Format

The signature Kalnirnay format combines:

Kalnirnay App

The official Kalnirnay app (Android/iOS) brings the same daily panchang data to mobile — with location-aware sunrise/sunset, customizable festival reminders, and the full content of the printed edition.

Calculation System

Kalnirnay uses Drik Ganita (modern observational astronomy) with Lahiri Ayanamsa — the Government of India standard. Its annual edition is reviewed by panchang scholars for ritual accuracy.

Where to Get

Kalnirnay is available across India — from kirana stores and newsstands, supermarket chains (DMart, Reliance Fresh), bookstores (Crossword, Sapna Book House), online (Amazon, Flipkart, kalnirnay.com), and through the official Kalnirnay app.
