What is a Tithi?
A tithi (తిథి) is a lunar day — the time the Moon takes to move 12° ahead of the Sun. A lunar month has 30 tithis: 15 in the bright half (Shukla Paksha, శుక్ల పక్షం — new moon to full moon) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna Paksha, కృష్ణ పక్షం — full moon to new moon). Because the Moon's orbital speed varies, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 19 to 26 hours, which is why tithi boundaries fall at different clock times every day. Is today's tithi the same in the USA and India?
Not always. The tithi for a calendar day is fixed by the tithi at local sunrise, and sunrise in New York or Dallas falls 9–12 hours after sunrise in India.
