Sankashti Chaturthi September 2026 — 29 September

సంకష్టహర చతుర్థి September 2026

Angaraki Vighnaraja Sankashti falls on Tuesday, 29 September 2026. Sankashti Chaturthi is the fourth tithi of the waning fortnight, kept for Ganapati. The fast runs from sunrise and is broken only after the moon has been sighted, so it is the moonrise — not sunset — that ends the day. One falls in each lunar month, and when it lands on a Tuesday it is Angaraki Sankashti, held the most consequential of the year.

What the day is for

Angaraki Vighnaraja Sankashti — Tuesday, 29 September 2026

A Tuesday Sankashti, which is Angaraki — held the most fruitful of the twelve, and said to carry the merit of a year of the others. The Sankashti of Ganesha’s own month, the fortnight after Vinayaka Chaturthi.

How the day is kept

  1. Sankalpa at sunrise. After bathing, the intention is stated before Ganapati — that the fast is kept for the removal of an obstacle, which is what sankashta-hara means.
  2. Fast through the day. Most keep phalahara — fruit, milk, and the sabudana, samak rice and groundnut foods a vrata allows. A stricter observance takes only water.
  3. Puja in the evening. Ganapati is offered durva grass in bunches, red flowers, and modak or laddu. The Sankashtanashana Ganesha Stotra and the Ganesha Atharvashirsha are the two texts customarily recited.
  4. Arghya to the moon. When the moon has been sighted, water is offered to it with sandal paste and rice, and only then is the fast broken. The moonrise is the whole point of the day — a fast broken before it is not this vrata.
  5. The meal. Taken after the arghya, satvik, with the modak offered to Ganapati first.

The moonrise above is for Hyderabad

It is the one figure on this page that changes materially with where you are. The same moon rises roughly fifteen to twenty minutes later in Mumbai, around half an hour later in Delhi, and earlier in Chennai and Kolkata. If you are keeping the fast outside Hyderabad, break it on your own city's moonrise — Today's Panchangam computes it from your location — and read the time here as the reference rather than the rule.

29 September 2026 — Angaraki Sankashti

A Sankashti Chaturthi falling on a Tuesday is Angaraki Sankashti — Angaraka is Mangala, Mars, whose day it is. The tradition holds it the most consequential Sankashti of the year, and it is the one kept by people who do not keep the monthly fast otherwise. It is also used for the pacification of Kuja (Mangal) Dosha, with the ordinary Ganapati vrata joined to a recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa.

Frequently asked

When is Sankashti Chaturthi in September 2026?
There is one — Angaraki Vighnaraja Sankashti on Tuesday, 29 September 2026. Dates are computed for Hyderabad with Lahiri ayanamsa; elsewhere in India the day is the same and the timings shift by a few minutes.
Why is the fast broken at moonrise and not at sunset?
Because the vrata is tied to the sighting of the moon rather than to the end of the day. Chaturthi is Ganapati's tithi, and the arghya offered to the moon is what completes the observance — a fast that ends before it has not been kept. It is also why the moonrise, and not the tithi end time, is the figure this page leads with.
What makes it Angaraki Sankashti?
A Sankashti Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday. Angaraka is Mangala — Mars — whose weekday it is, and the tradition holds this the most consequential Sankashti of the year. Two or three fall in a typical year.
Is the moonrise time the same across India?
No, and this is the one timing where the difference matters. The moonrise here is computed for Hyderabad; it runs roughly fifteen to twenty minutes later in Mumbai and around half an hour later in Delhi, and earlier in Chennai and Kolkata. Break the fast on your own city's moonrise.
Where do these Sankashti Chaturthi dates come from?
They are computed from this site's own panchangam engine and cross-checked against the same series that drives the Sankashti Chaturthi hub and the subscribable calendar feed, so the three can never disagree.
