Pradosham April 2027 — 4 April and 18 April

ప్రదోషం April 2027

Phalguna Krishna Pradosham falls on Sunday, 4 April 2027, and Chaitra Shukla Pradosham falls on Sunday, 18 April 2027. Pradosham is the thirteenth tithi at dusk, kept for Shiva. Two fall in every lunar month — one in the waxing fortnight, one in the waning — and both are observed in the twilight window around sunset rather than through the day.

What these days are for

Phalguna Krishna Pradosham — Sunday, 4 April 2027

The last Pradosham of the lunar year. Kept for protection through the year to come.

Chaitra Shukla Pradosham — Sunday, 18 April 2027

The first Pradosham of the lunar year. Abhishekam with water and bilva at dusk.

When pradosha kaal falls

Pradosha kaal is the twilight around sunset on trayodashi, and the whole observance sits inside it — for most who keep the day, the hours before carry no fast at all. How wide the window runs is not settled. The commonly kept practice takes roughly the hour and a half centred on sunset; some panchangams give forty-five minutes either side; others count only the three ghatikas — about seventy-two minutes — after sunset. Every one of them starts from the sunset in the table above, which is why that is the figure this page prints. If your family or your temple keeps a particular window, keep it; nothing here is meant to displace it.

How the evening is kept

  1. Bathe before the window opens. The observance begins clean, and the bath is taken in the hour before sunset rather than in the morning.
  2. Abhishekam. The lingam is bathed — water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, water again — then dressed with vibhuti, bilva leaves and white flowers. Bilva is the leaf Shiva is said to accept above any other.
  3. Nandi first. Nandi is worshipped before Shiva, and the darshan is customarily taken between his horns.
  4. Somasutra pradakshina. The circumambulation is not a full circle. One walks to the outlet carrying the abhishekam water away, turns back rather than crossing it, and returns the other way — repeated as many times as the family keeps.
  5. Recitation. The Shiva Panchakshari — Om Namah Shivaya — and the Pradosha Stotra, through the window.
  6. Breaking the fast. Those who fasted through the day eat after the puja: satvik, without onion or garlic.

Why dusk

The day is tied to the churning of the ocean. When the halahala poison rose and threatened everything living, Shiva drank it and held it in his throat, which is why he is Nilakantha, the blue-throated. The devas' relief came at dusk on a trayodashi, and it is that hour the observance keeps — less a fast of penance than an hour of thanksgiving, which is why it is kept in the evening and why the mood of it is unlike a day-long vrata.

Frequently asked

When is Pradosham in April 2027?
There are 2 — Phalguna Krishna Pradosham on Sunday, 4 April 2027; Chaitra Shukla Pradosham on Sunday, 18 April 2027. Dates are computed for Hyderabad with Lahiri ayanamsa; elsewhere in India the day is the same and the timings shift by a few minutes.
How long does pradosha kaal last?
The sources disagree, and this page does not pretend otherwise. The commonly kept window is roughly the hour and a half centred on sunset; some panchangams give forty-five minutes either side, and some count only the three ghatikas — about seventy-two minutes — after sunset. All of them start from the sunset in the table above. If your family or temple keeps a particular window, keep it.
Does Pradosham need a day-long fast?
Not for most who keep it. The observance sits in the evening window, and the common practice is a light day followed by the abhishekam and a meal after it. A full fast from sunrise is kept by some, particularly on Shani Pradosham, but it is not what the day requires.
Why are there two every month?
Because trayodashi — the thirteenth tithi — comes once in the waxing fortnight and once in the waning, so every lunar month holds two. That gives twenty-four in an ordinary year, and twenty-five or twenty-six in a year carrying an adhika month.
Where do these Pradosham dates come from?
They are computed from this site's own panchangam engine and cross-checked against the same series that drives the Pradosham hub and the subscribable calendar feed, so the three can never disagree.
