Kerala Panchangam & the Kollam Era

Kerala panchangams use a distinct calendar — the Kollam Era (Malayalam Era / Kollavarsham), which began in 825 CE and runs from Chingam 1 (mid-August). Alongside the Kollam Era, Kerala panchangams also list Saka and Gregorian dates.

The most authoritative Kerala panchangam is the Kanippayyur Panchangam, published by the Kanippayyur Mana (a traditional Namboodiri Brahmin family at Kunnamkulam, Trichur district) — the Press was founded in 1929 by the scholar Kanippayyur Sankaran Namboothiripad (1891-1981). It is the reference for Kerala temple ritual scheduling, marriage muhurtams, and Vishu (Kerala New Year) calculations.

The newspaper-bundled Mathrubhumi (Kozhikode, 1923) and Malayala Manorama (Kottayam, 1888) Calendars reach the broadest Malayali audience and are also distributed as popular mobile apps.
