The Birth at Ayodhya
Dasharatha of Ayodhya had ruled long and well and had no son. On the advice of his ministers he performed the Putrakameshti yaga, and from the fire rose a divine being with a vessel of payasam. Divided among his three queens, it gave him four sons — Rama to Kausalya, Bharata to Kaikeyi, and Lakshmana and Shatrughna to Sumitra.
Rama was born on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of Chaitra, at midday, under Punarvasu nakshatra with Karka as the rising sign. The tradition is precise about the hour: unlike Krishna, who was born at midnight in a prison, Rama was born at noon in a palace, to a father who had waited a lifetime for him. The festival follows that — the main worship is at madhyahna, the middle of the day, and not at night.
What the day marks is not only a birth but a standard. Rama is called Maryada Purushottama, the man who kept the line — who went into exile for fourteen years rather than let his father's word be broken, who would not take a second wife, who ruled so that the reign itself became the name for good government. The Ramayana is read on this day precisely because the life and not the birth is the point of it.
In the Telugu-speaking country the day carries a second observance of equal weight. It is kept as Sitarama Kalyanam, the wedding of Rama and Sita, performed in temples and in households as a formal marriage with the full ritual, the talambralu poured, the mangalasutram tied. Bhadrachalam holds the largest of them. The birth and the marriage are placed on the same day so that the household can attend a wedding without a bride's family or a groom's — the whole town is the family.
Sri Rama Navami Puja Vidhi — Step by Step
The worship is held at madhyahna, the midday window in which the birth is placed. That window is in the muhurat panel above, because it is computed from your city's sunrise and sunset and is not simply twelve o'clock.
| Step | What is done |
|---|---|
| 1 | Snana and sankalpa — Bathe early, wear fresh clothes, and take the sankalpa for the vrat. Households keeping the nine-day Chaitra Navratri complete its ninth day here. |
| 2 | Prepare the mandapam — Set the altar with a mango-leaf toranam, muggu at the doorway, and the images of Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman together — Rama is not worshipped alone on this day. |
| 3 | Kalasha sthapana and Ganesha puja — Set the kalasha, invoke Ganesha, and where the Kalyanam will be performed set the two kalashas for the bride and groom. |
| 4 | Dhyanam and shodashopachara — Meditate on the form — the bow, the blue-green hue, Sita to his left — then offer the sixteen services in order. |
| 5 | Madhyahna puja — At the midday window offer the abhishekam, fresh tulasi, jasmine and the season's flowers, and chant the Rama ashtottara or the sahasranama. |
| 6 | Naivedyam of the season — Offer panakam, vadapappu and neer majjige — the three that belong to this day — with chalimidi, payasam and seasonal fruit. |
| 7 | Sitarama Kalyanam — Where the household keeps it, perform the wedding: the exchange of garlands, the mangalasutram, and talambralu — turmeric-tinted rice — poured over the pair by everyone present. |
| 8 | Ramayana parayana — Read the Bala Kanda's birth chapter at minimum; households that began the reading on Ugadi complete it today. Sundara Kanda is read where the full text cannot be. |
| 9 | Pattabhishekam — Some temples follow the Kalyanam with the coronation, closing the day on Rama Rajyam rather than on the wedding. |
| 10 | Aarti and prasada distribution — Camphor aarti, then the panakam and vadapappu given out to everyone who comes. Distribution outside the house is part of this festival, not an extra. |
Where nothing else can be done, the day is kept with the Rama Taraka mantra, a reading of Sundara Kanda, and panakam offered and shared. The three offerings are the one thing no Telugu household leaves out.
Fasting on Sri Rama Navami
The fast is a half-day one, released after the midday worship rather than held through the night.
| Grade | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Upavasa till madhyahna | Nothing from sunrise until the midday puja, then the prasada and a single meal. The usual grade. |
| Phalahara | Fruit, milk and the non-grain foods through the day, with the meal after the evening aarti. |
| Ekabhukta | One sattvic meal for the day, taken after the madhyahna worship, with japa and parayana through the rest. |
| Substituted observance | Children, the elderly and anyone unwell take the panakam and prasada and keep the day with the Ramayana reading. The season is hot and the fast is not pressed. |
The panakam is itself part of why this fast is gentle. Jaggery water with pepper, cardamom and dry ginger is a rehydration drink for the start of the hot season, and it is offered and drunk in quantity on this day for exactly that reason.
Mantras Chanted on Sri Rama Navami
These are chanted through the day and especially at the midday worship.
| Mantra | What it means |
|---|---|
| శ్రీ రామ జయ రామ జయ జయ రామ Sri Rama Jaya Rama Jaya Jaya Rama | The Rama Taraka mantra, thirteen syllables. The most widely chanted Rama mantra and the one used for japa on this day; no initiation is needed. |
| ఓం శ్రీ రామాయ నమః Om Sri Ramaya Namah | The simple salutation, used with each flower offered during the archana. |
| ఓం ఆపదామపహర్తారం దాతారం సర్వసంపదామ్ | లోకాభిరామం శ్రీరామం భూయో భూయో నమామ్యహమ్ || Om apadam apahartaram dataram sarva-sampadam, lokabhiramam Sri Ramam bhuyo bhuyo namamy aham | The opening verse of the Rama Raksha Stotram — a salutation to the remover of adversity and giver of all prosperity, the delight of the world. Recited before the parayana begins. |
Chant at whatever pace lets the words stay clear. Tradition counts attention, not speed, and a short count said with care is held better than a long one rushed. If a syllable is uncertain, follow your family priest or your temple's recitation rather than a transliteration.
How Sri Rama Navami Is Kept Region by Region
The birth is common to every version. Whether the day is a wedding, a chariot festival or the close of a nine-day reading is what changes.
| Region | How the day is kept |
|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Kept above all as Sitarama Kalyanam. Bhadrachalam performs the wedding in the presence of lakhs, with pearls sent by the state as talambralu, and Vontimitta in Kadapa holds the other great Kalyanam. Households prepare panakam, vadapappu and chalimidi and distribute them at the gate. |
| Tamil Nadu | Kept as Sri Ramanavami with Kalyana Utsavam in the Perumal temples, and panakam and neer mor distributed at pandals on the street. The Rama Navami sangeetha utsavam tradition of Bhajana sampradaya kirtanas belongs to this day. |
| Karnataka | Panaka and kosambari are the offerings, and the day opens the Rama Navami music season — temple and sabha concerts held over days, most prominently in Bengaluru and Mysuru. |
| Ayodhya | The largest observance anywhere. The Sarayu bath at dawn, the Ram Janmabhoomi darshan, and the Ram Navami Mela which runs for several days around it. |
| Maharashtra | Ramjanma is marked at noon in the Ram temples with a kirtan that ends at the birth moment, a cradle rocked, and sunthavada — a dry-ginger sweet — distributed. The palkhi is taken out in the evening. |
| Bihar and Uttar Pradesh | Sitamarhi, held as Sita's birthplace, keeps the day with a large fair, and Ramnavami processions with akhara displays are taken out in the towns. |
| Odisha and West Bengal | Kept with Ramayana parayana and Rathotsavam at the Rama temples; in Bengal the Ramnavami procession has grown in recent decades. |
| Rameswaram and the far South | Rameswaram keeps the day with a special abhishekam, on the strength of its place in the Ramayana itself, and Bhadrachalam-style Kalyanams are held through the Telugu diaspora temples abroad. |
Panakam, vadapappu and neer majjige — why these three
Every festival has its offering, and the three on this day are unusual in being chosen for the weather rather than for the deity. Sri Rama Navami falls at the start of the hot season in peninsular India, and all three are what the body needs then.
Panakam is jaggery dissolved in water with crushed pepper, cardamom and dry ginger, and a little lemon. Jaggery replaces the minerals lost in the heat, the pepper and ginger keep the digestion working, and the drink rehydrates faster than plain water. It is offered to Rama and then given out in glasses to anyone passing the house.
Vadapappu is moong dal soaked, not cooked — drained, mixed with grated coconut, green chilli, a little salt and sometimes raw mango. Soaked dal is cooling and light and needs no fire on a hot day. Neer majjige is buttermilk thinned with water, with curry leaf, ginger, green chilli and salt, and it is the third of the set.
This is the pattern the whole panchangam year follows: the offering suits the season, and the festival is how the household is reminded to make it.
The nine days that end today
Sri Rama Navami is the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri, also called Vasanta Navratri — the spring Navratri, which begins on the same day as Ugadi and Gudi Padwa. In the North it is kept as nine days of Devi worship ending in Ram Navami; in the Telugu and Kannada country the nine days are more often kept as a Ramayana parayana begun on Ugadi and completed on this day.
That is why some households treat today as a beginning and others as a conclusion. Both readings are traditional. If you started the Ramayana on Ugadi, today is the Pattabhishekam chapter; if you are keeping the nine days for the Devi, today is the ninth and the Kanya Puja belongs to it.
The nine-day reading is also why the day carries no elaborate preparation of its own. The work was done across the fortnight, and the ninth day is the wedding and the reading's end.

Points Households Most Often Get Wrong
| # | Point |
|---|---|
| 1 | Worshipping at sunrise or in the evening instead of at midday — The birth is placed at madhyahna, and the madhyahna window is computed from your city's day length. Take it from the panel above. |
| 2 | Worshipping Rama alone — On this day the altar carries Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman together. The Telugu observance is a wedding, so Sita is not optional. |
| 3 | Cooking the vadapappu — The dal is soaked and drained, never boiled. Cooking it makes it a different dish and loses the reason it is offered. |
| 4 | Making the panakam thick — It is a drink, not a syrup. Thin enough to be poured into glasses and handed to strangers, which is what it is for. |
| 5 | Skipping the distribution — Giving the panakam and vadapappu out beyond the household is part of the observance in the South, not an afterthought to it. |
