Garuda Panchami 2026 — Monday, 17 August 2026

Garuda Panchami is the Karnataka + Andhra Pradesh + Telangana observance of Shravana Shukla Panchami (17 August 2026). Married women worship Garuda — Lord Vishnu's divine eagle vahana — for their brothers' longevity, health, and prosperity. Falls on the same tithi as pan-India Nag Panchami.

When is Garuda Panchami 2026?

Garuda Panchami 2026 falls on Monday, 17 August 2026.

  • Date: 17 August 2026
  • Tithi: Shravana Shukla Panchami
  • Tithi timing: Panchami begins 4:52 PM on 16 August 2026, ends 5:00 PM on 17 August 2026 (IST)
  • Nakshatra: Hasta / Chitra
  • Sun Rashi: Simha (Leo)
  • Masa: Shravana Masam
  • Presiding Deity: Garuda (Vishnu's divine eagle vahana) and Naga Devatas

Significance

Garuda Panchami traces its origin to the Puranic legend of Vinata and Kadru — the two wives of Sage Kashyapa. Kadru's deceit trapped Vinata in slavery, and only her son Garuda's Herculean effort of stealing the Amrita (nectar of immortality) from Indraloka won her freedom. Garuda's devotion to his mother is celebrated as the ultimate example of putra-dharma (duty of a son). In the Telugu-Kannada tradition, married women who observe Garuda Panchami invoke that same devotional bond — praying for their brothers' well-being, family prosperity, and marital harmony. The festival specifically emphasises the brother-sister bond (distinct from Raksha Bandhan's later date), and newly-wed couples observe it for marital bliss and progeny. In Karnataka, women prepare special naivedyam (undhi, chakli, holige) and perform puja to a Garuda image installed alongside Naga idols.

Puja Vidhi (Step-by-Step)

  1. Wake before sunrise on Panchami tithi (17 August 2026), take an oil bath (mangala snana), and wear a new saree (preferably yellow or red — Vishnu's colours).
  2. Married women observe partial fast (Phalahar) — no rice or grains until after puja.
  3. Set up puja sthal with Garuda image or metal idol at the centre, Naga images beside it, and a photo of Lord Vishnu.
  4. Perform Sankalpa mentioning the intent: for the well-being of brothers (annalu), sons, and family prosperity.
  5. Offer haldi, kumkum, sandalwood, akshat, and yellow flowers (marigold, chrysanthemum) to Garuda.
  6. Perform Shodashopachara (16 upacharas) — asana, padya, arghya, snana, vastra, gandha, pushpa, dhupa, deepa, naivedya, etc.
  7. Offer traditional naivedyam: undhi (rice-flour steamed dumplings), chakli, holige (bobbatlu), pulihora, coconut, and jaggery.
  8. Chant the Garuda Gayatri and Garuda Panchakshari 108 times.
  9. Distribute prasadam to brothers (in person or send it) — traditionally the sister blesses her brother with rice grains after the puja.
  10. Perform aarti with a pure ghee lamp and conclude with Vishnu Sahasranama (or its shorter Ashtottara).

Auspicious Muhurat & Timings

Puja muhurat: 5:51 AM to 8:29 AM IST on 17 August 2026 (~2h 37min window; same as Nag Panchami since it's the same tithi). South Indian cities: shift back by 10–15 min. Panchami tithi ends 5:00 PM IST, so any puja must conclude before then.

⚠ Caution: Bhadra Kaal runs until ~9:12 AM IST on 17 August 2026. For vratam and Garuda puja, most Karnataka-tradition texts allow puja during the prescribed muhurat within Bhadra since it is an existing observance (nitya karma), NOT a new-work initiation.

Mantras

Garuda Gayatri

ॐ तत्पुरुषाय विद्महे सुवर्णपक्षाय धीमहि तन्नो गरुडः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om. We meditate on the great person, the golden-winged one. May Garuda illumine our intellect.

Garuda Panchakshari

ॐ क्षिप्रं गरुडाय नमः॥

Om. Salutations to Garuda who acts swiftly. (Recited for protection and for removing obstacles.)

Vinata Putra Stuti

विनतासुत गोविन्द वाहन गरुत्मते। पन्नगारि सुपर्णाय पक्षिराज नमोऽस्तु ते॥

O son of Vinata, vehicle of Govinda, mighty-winged Garutman, foe of serpents, king of birds — I bow to you.

✓ Do's

  • Married women (Sumangalis) take mangala snana before sunrise and wear new attire (yellow or red).
  • Offer worship to Garuda alongside Naga Devatas — the two are honoured together on this tithi.
  • Prepare and offer traditional Karnataka/AP naivedyam: undhi, chakli, holige, pulihora.
  • Send prasadam to brothers with a personal blessing — traditionally the core act of the vratam.
  • Recite Garuda Gayatri and Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • Donate rice, jaggery, and cloth to Brahmins or a Vishnu temple.

✗ Don'ts

  • Do NOT dig the earth, plough, or drive stakes — same restriction as Nag Panchami (Naga home preservation).
  • Do NOT cook on iron griddle or use sharp iron tools on this day.
  • Do NOT consume onion, garlic, meat, or tamasik food.
  • Do NOT quarrel with brothers or family — the vratam's intent is protective love.
  • Do NOT skip the naivedyam-to-brother step — considered central to the vratam's phala (fruit).
  • Do NOT observe the vratam without proper Sankalpa (stated intent) — pandit-guided is preferred for first-time observers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What date is Garuda Panchami in 2026?

Garuda Panchami 2026 falls on Monday, 17 August 2026 — the Shukla Panchami tithi of the Shravana month (Amanta lunar calendar). Same tithi as pan-India Nag Panchami. Observed primarily in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

Who observes Garuda Panchami and why?

Married women (Sumangalis) in Karnataka + AP + Telangana observe the Garuda Panchami vratam for their brothers' longevity, health, and prosperity. Newly-wed couples observe it for marital bliss and progeny. The observance draws its meaning from Garuda's legendary devotion to his mother Vinata (Puranic story of freeing her from Kadru's slavery by fetching Amrita).

Is Garuda Panchami the same as Nag Panchami?

They fall on the SAME tithi (Shravana Shukla Panchami — 17 Aug 2026) but are DISTINCT observances. Nag Panchami is pan-India Naga worship; Garuda Panchami is the Karnataka/AP/Telangana observance emphasising the brother-sister bond via Garuda worship. Many devotees in south India observe BOTH on the same day.

What is the puja muhurat for Garuda Panchami 2026?

The muhurat is 5:51 AM to 8:29 AM IST on 17 August 2026 (Delhi reference; South Indian cities shift back by 10–15 min). Puja must conclude before 5:00 PM IST when Panchami tithi ends.

What naivedyam is traditional for Garuda Panchami?

Traditional Karnataka + AP + Telangana offerings: undhi (rice-flour steamed dumplings), chakli, holige / bobbatlu / obbattu (stuffed sweet flatbread with chana-jaggery filling), pulihora (tamarind rice), coconut, and jaggery. All strictly sattvik and prepared fresh in the morning.

Can unmarried women observe Garuda Panchami?

Traditionally the vratam is done by married women (Sumangalis) for brothers, but unmarried women may perform a simpler puja for family well-being. Newly-wed couples may observe it jointly for marital bliss. Consult a family pandit for specific vidhanam.
