Understanding Each Koota

Varna (0/1): Spiritual / mental compatibility. Boy varna should be equal or higher than girl varna for ideal match. Kshatriya (boy) is lower than Brahmin (girl).

Vashya (1/2): Power / influence balance. Determines who naturally takes the lead. Chatushpada and Jalachara combinations.

Tara (3/3): Birth star compatibility. Counts the position of one nakshatra from the other modulo 9. Bad taras (Vipat, Pratyari, Naidhana, Vadha) reduce score.

Yoni (2/4): Sexual + temperamental compatibility based on animal symbolism. Ashwa (Ashwini) × Gau (Uttara Bhadrapada). Neutral yoni pairing.

Graha Maitri (4/5): Friendship between the rashi lords. Mars (boy) and Jupiter (girl). Friendly planetary relationship.

Gana (5/6): Temperament category. Deva (boy) × Manushya (girl). Compatible temperaments.

Bhakoot (7/7): Rashi position compatibility. Mesha (boy) × Meena (girl). No bhakoot dosha — recommended pairing.

Nadi (8/8): Genetic / health compatibility. Adi (boy) × Madhya (girl). Different nadis — no nadi dosha.

What This Means for Marriage

A total Ashta Koota score of 30/36 places this combination in the Good — Recommended category. This is generally considered a recommended pairing in classical Vedic matchmaking. However, even good Ashta Koota scores should be cross-verified with full kundli matching including Manglik dosha check, Sade Sati overlap, and Dasha-Antardasha sequence analysis. Consult a Vedic astrologer before finalizing. For a full consultation, see Dosha Library and complete Marriage Matching guide.

Methodology & Trust

Ashta Koota scoring follows the methodology in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Muhurta Chintamani, and the Kashyapa Samhita. Authored by Pandit Ramachandra Sharma, Vedic Astrologer & Panchangam Scholar. For deeper context see Ashta Koota Milan, 27 Nakshatras, and Marriage Matching Library. Note: Classical compatibility scoring is a guideline. Full kundli matching with birth time precision is required for ritual-critical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is compatibility calculated?
We use the classical Ashta Koota Milan system from Vedic astrology, scoring 8 factors: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Maximum score is 36; 18+ is considered acceptable.
Is a low score a dealbreaker?
Not necessarily. A score below 18 indicates challenges that need addressing through pariharas (remedies). Many successful marriages exist with scores under 18. Consult a qualified astrologer for nuanced analysis.
What if we have nadi dosha?
Nadi Dosha (same Nadi for both) is the most serious dosha. Pariharas include Maha Mrityunjaya jap, donations, specific pujas. Some classical exemptions also apply.
Is nakshatra matching enough?
Nakshatra matching is the foundation. For complete analysis, also compare full birth charts (kundli matching) including Mangal Dosha, dasha alignment, and planetary aspects.
Can compatibility scores predict divorce?
No. They predict relationship dynamics and challenges, not outcomes. Communication, shared values, and mutual respect matter most.
