What is Manglik / Kuja Dosha?
Manglik Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha in South India or Mangal Dosha in the north) is one of the most discussed afflictions in Vedic astrology, especially for marriage matching. It occurs when Mars (Mangal in Sanskrit, Kuja in Telugu/Tamil) is placed in any of these houses of your janma kundali:
- 1st house (Lagna) — affects self, personality
- 2nd house — affects family, speech, wealth
- 4th house — affects domestic peace, mother
- 7th house — affects spouse, marriage (most severe)
- 8th house — affects spouse's longevity (most severe)
- 12th house — affects bed-pleasures, foreign matters
Mars in these houses can cause delays in marriage, conflicts in marital life, or even health issues for the spouse. The 7th and 8th house placements are considered the most serious.
Severity of Manglik Dosha
- High Manglik: Mars in 7th or 8th house, especially in malefic signs (Aries, Scorpio in fall, Cancer debilitated).
- Moderate Manglik: Mars in 1st, 4th, or 12th house.
- Low Manglik (Anshik): Mars in 2nd house, or in friendly/exalted signs reducing intensity.
- Double Manglik (Bhauma): Mars in 7th/8th AND aspected by another malefic (Saturn, Rahu) — very serious.
Cancellation Rules (Manglik Dosha Bhanga)
Classical texts (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika) describe several conditions that cancel or reduce Manglik Dosha:
- Mars in own sign (Aries, Scorpio) reduces the dosha.
- Mars in exaltation sign (Capricorn) significantly reduces it.
- Mars aspected by Jupiter — Jupiter's benefic aspect cancels Mars' malefic effects.
- Both partners are Manglik — the dosha is mutually neutralized.
- Manglik person marries after age 28 (Mars matures by then).
- Mars conjunct or aspected by Moon — emotional balance reduces Mars aggression.
- Specific yogas in Navamsa chart (D9) can cancel.
Vedic Remedies (Parihara)
- Mangal Stotra / Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays — both are linked to Mars.
- Visit Hanuman temple on Tuesdays. Hanuman is the deity invoked for Mars-related issues.
- Red coral (Moonga) ring on right hand ring finger — ONLY after qualified astrologer consultation.
- Kumbha Vivaha ritual — symbolic marriage to a clay pot, banana tree, or peepal tree before actual marriage (classical remedy in extreme cases).
- Mangal Shanti puja — usually performed by family priest before marriage finalization.
- Donate red items (red lentils, red cloth, jaggery, copper) on Tuesdays.
- Avoid red meat, alcohol on Tuesdays; observe Tuesday vrat dedicated to Hanuman.
Manglik in Modern Times
Manglik Dosha is often overemphasized in popular consultation, leading to unnecessary marriage delays. True Manglik analysis requires:
- Full janma kundali (not just sun/moon sign).
- Navamsa (D9) chart review.
- Mars' strength, dignity, and aspects.
- The 7th house and its lord's condition.
- Compatibility analysis with the prospective partner's chart.
