What is Kalsarpa Dosha?

Kalsarpa Dosha (also called Kal Sarp Yoga or Kalasarpa Yoga) is a powerful and controversial configuration in Vedic astrology. It occurs when all 7 visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are positioned within the axis between Rahu and Ketu in your janma kundali.

The word "Kal" (time/death) and "Sarpa" (serpent) refer to the cosmic serpent of time whose mouth is Rahu and tail is Ketu. When all planets fall within this "swallowed" zone, the chart is said to carry the imprint of unresolved karmic patterns from past lives.

Approximately 20-25% of people have some form of Kalsarpa Yoga, though only a fraction experience its most intense effects.

The 12 Types of Kalsarpa Dosha

Kalsarpa is classified into 12 types based on Rahu's house position. Each has distinct themes:

  1. Anant Kalsarpa (Rahu in 1st, Ketu in 7th) — self vs partner conflicts, identity issues.
  2. Kulik Kalsarpa (Rahu in 2nd, Ketu in 8th) — family wealth issues, throat/speech.
  3. Vasuki Kalsarpa (Rahu in 3rd, Ketu in 9th) — siblings, courage, dharma conflicts.
  4. Shankhpal Kalsarpa (Rahu in 4th, Ketu in 10th) — domestic peace, mother, career.
  5. Padma Kalsarpa (Rahu in 5th, Ketu in 11th) — progeny issues, education, gains.
  6. Mahapadma Kalsarpa (Rahu in 6th, Ketu in 12th) — enemies, debts, hidden expenses.
  7. Takshak Kalsarpa (Rahu in 7th, Ketu in 1st) — partner difficulties, marriage delays.
  8. Karkotaka Kalsarpa (Rahu in 8th, Ketu in 2nd) — chronic health, family transformation.
  9. Shankhachuda Kalsarpa (Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd) — dharma confusion, father issues.
  10. Ghatak Kalsarpa (Rahu in 10th, Ketu in 4th) — career instability, mother distance.
  11. Vishadhar Kalsarpa (Rahu in 11th, Ketu in 5th) — gains-loss cycles, friend issues.
  12. Sheshnag Kalsarpa (Rahu in 12th, Ketu in 6th) — foreign travel, hidden enemies, isolation.

Effects of Kalsarpa Dosha

Common manifestations (not all apply to every chart):

  • Recurrent struggle, repeated obstacles even after hard work.
  • Sense of being "stuck" in patterns despite trying to break free.
  • Recurring dreams of serpents, water, or ancestors.
  • Marriage delays or relationship instability.
  • Career setbacks at high points (the "rise then fall" pattern).
  • Inability to retain wealth despite earning well.
  • Spiritual seekings, restless soul, deep questions about purpose.

Important: Many highly successful people have Kalsarpa Yoga — including some major political and spiritual leaders. The yoga forces inner work and karmic resolution, which when accepted can lead to extraordinary transformation. It is NOT a death sentence.

Vedic Remedies (Parihara)

  1. Kalsarpa Dosha Puja at Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra) — the most famous and effective ritual. Performed at Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, traditionally lasts 3 hours.
  2. Naga Pratishtha — installation of serpent idols at Nagas temple (especially in Kerala — Mannarasala, Vettikode).
  3. Daily chanting of Naga Stotra or Garuda Mantra — 108 times daily.
  4. Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap — 108×40 days for serious Kalsarpa.
  5. Donate snake-shaped silver, gold, or 1.25 meters of yellow cloth at Shiva temple on Nag Panchami.
  6. Rudraksha mala (5-mukhi) for daily wear — neutralizes Rahu-Ketu energy.
  7. Offer milk + til (sesame) to Shiva linga every Monday + Saturday.
  8. Avoid leather, alcohol, and meat at least on Mondays and Saturdays.
  9. Nag Panchami fast (Shravana Shukla Panchami) — most powerful annual Kalsarpa remedy.

How to Check Kalsarpa Yoga

Generate your full kundli using our Free Kundli Calculator. Check:

  1. Find Rahu's house position in your chart.
  2. Ketu is always exactly 180° opposite Rahu.
  3. Check if ALL 7 visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are between Rahu and Ketu — either all on one side or distributed.
  4. If yes — you have Kalsarpa Yoga. The specific Rahu house determines the type (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, etc.).

Partial Kalsarpa: If 1-2 planets escape the Rahu-Ketu axis, the dosha is partial and significantly milder.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kalsarpa Dosha a real dosha or myth?
Kalsarpa Yoga is not mentioned in the foundational classics like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. It is a more recent (last 200-300 years) interpretation that gained popularity in the 20th century. Some traditional astrologers reject it; others consider it valid. The configuration itself (planets between nodes) is astronomically real — the karmic interpretation is what varies.
Can Kalsarpa Dosha be completely removed?
No. Like any planetary configuration, it remains for life. But its EFFECTS can be significantly reduced through sincere remedies (especially Trimbakeshwar puja + daily mantra practice). Many people with Kalsarpa report dramatic life improvement after consistent parihara.
Should I avoid marriage if I have Kalsarpa?
Absolutely not. Marriage compatibility depends on far more factors than Kalsarpa alone. Many happy marriages exist with Kalsarpa in one or both partners. If you have severe Kalsarpa (Takshak — Rahu in 7th), perform Kalsarpa Puja before marriage and choose a partner whose chart doesn't amplify the dosha.
What is the most effective Kalsarpa remedy?
The Kalsarpa Dosha Puja at Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra) is considered the most powerful. It is performed at the Jyotirlinga where the Godavari river originates. For those who cannot travel, daily Naga Stotra recitation + monthly visit to a local Shiva temple is recommended. Nag Panchami (Shravana Shukla Panchami) annual fast is the most accessible powerful remedy.
How long do Kalsarpa effects last?
Kalsarpa is most intensely felt during the dashas/bhuktis of Rahu and Ketu in your individual Vimshottari dasha sequence. Outside those periods, effects are milder. With remedies, even Rahu/Ketu periods can pass smoothly.

About These Calculations

Our Vedic calculators use astronomical-grade ephemerides converted to sidereal positions via the Lahiri (Chitra-paksha) Ayanamsa — the Government of India's official sidereal standard since the 1955 Saha Committee Calendar Reform. The Moon Sign (Chandra Rāśi) calculator computes the Moon's longitude using a simplified ELP-2000 lunar model, then subtracts the Lahiri Ayanamsa (currently ~24°13′) to get the sidereal position. Dividing the result by 30° gives the rāśi (sign).

Accuracy Note

For ~95% of dates the result matches the position computed by professional ephemerides (Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri Ephemeris). For dates near rāśi boundaries (within 3° of a sign edge), we display a warning to verify with a Vedic astrologer — small algorithmic differences can place the Moon in the adjacent sign. Pure observational accuracy to the minute requires birth time and place precision.
