What is Kalsarpa Dosha?
Kalsarpa Dosha (also called Kal Sarp Yoga or Kalasarpa Yoga) is a powerful and controversial configuration in Vedic astrology. It occurs when all 7 visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are positioned within the axis between Rahu and Ketu in your janma kundali.
The word "Kal" (time/death) and "Sarpa" (serpent) refer to the cosmic serpent of time whose mouth is Rahu and tail is Ketu. When all planets fall within this "swallowed" zone, the chart is said to carry the imprint of unresolved karmic patterns from past lives.
Approximately 20-25% of people have some form of Kalsarpa Yoga, though only a fraction experience its most intense effects.
The 12 Types of Kalsarpa Dosha
Kalsarpa is classified into 12 types based on Rahu's house position. Each has distinct themes:
- Anant Kalsarpa (Rahu in 1st, Ketu in 7th) — self vs partner conflicts, identity issues.
- Kulik Kalsarpa (Rahu in 2nd, Ketu in 8th) — family wealth issues, throat/speech.
- Vasuki Kalsarpa (Rahu in 3rd, Ketu in 9th) — siblings, courage, dharma conflicts.
- Shankhpal Kalsarpa (Rahu in 4th, Ketu in 10th) — domestic peace, mother, career.
- Padma Kalsarpa (Rahu in 5th, Ketu in 11th) — progeny issues, education, gains.
- Mahapadma Kalsarpa (Rahu in 6th, Ketu in 12th) — enemies, debts, hidden expenses.
- Takshak Kalsarpa (Rahu in 7th, Ketu in 1st) — partner difficulties, marriage delays.
- Karkotaka Kalsarpa (Rahu in 8th, Ketu in 2nd) — chronic health, family transformation.
- Shankhachuda Kalsarpa (Rahu in 9th, Ketu in 3rd) — dharma confusion, father issues.
- Ghatak Kalsarpa (Rahu in 10th, Ketu in 4th) — career instability, mother distance.
- Vishadhar Kalsarpa (Rahu in 11th, Ketu in 5th) — gains-loss cycles, friend issues.
- Sheshnag Kalsarpa (Rahu in 12th, Ketu in 6th) — foreign travel, hidden enemies, isolation.
Effects of Kalsarpa Dosha
Common manifestations (not all apply to every chart):
- Recurrent struggle, repeated obstacles even after hard work.
- Sense of being "stuck" in patterns despite trying to break free.
- Recurring dreams of serpents, water, or ancestors.
- Marriage delays or relationship instability.
- Career setbacks at high points (the "rise then fall" pattern).
- Inability to retain wealth despite earning well.
- Spiritual seekings, restless soul, deep questions about purpose.
Important: Many highly successful people have Kalsarpa Yoga — including some major political and spiritual leaders. The yoga forces inner work and karmic resolution, which when accepted can lead to extraordinary transformation. It is NOT a death sentence.

How to Check Kalsarpa Yoga
Generate your full kundli using our Free Kundli Calculator. Check:
- Find Rahu's house position in your chart.
- Ketu is always exactly 180° opposite Rahu.
- Check if ALL 7 visible planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) are between Rahu and Ketu — either all on one side or distributed.
- If yes — you have Kalsarpa Yoga. The specific Rahu house determines the type (Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, etc.).
Partial Kalsarpa: If 1-2 planets escape the Rahu-Ketu axis, the dosha is partial and significantly milder.
