Thirukanitha Panchangam
திருக்கணித பஞ்சாங்கம்
Thirukanitha Panchangam is the Drik-based (astronomically precise) Tamil panchangam, used by households and temples that follow modern observational astronomy. "Thirukanitham" means "precise/sacred calculation" — distinguishing this stream from the traditional Vakya tables of Pambu Panchangam.

"Thirukanitha" — Precise Calculation
The Tamil term Thirukanitham (திருக்கணிதம்) translates to "sacred precise calculation." It refers to the Drik Ganita astronomical school — the same modern observational system used by the Rashtriya Panchang and Lahiri Ephemeris. Tamil Thirukanitha Panchangams use modern computer-aided ephemerides and Lahiri Ayanamsa for all tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana calculations.
When to Use Thirukanitha Over Vakya
- Eclipse calculations — Drik is astronomically accurate; Vakya can be 10-30 minutes off
- Modern muhurtam for weddings, business, travel
- Personal observances like Sankashti Chaturthi, Pradosham, Ekadashi
- Birth nakshatra confirmation for jathakam (kundli)
Where Used
Thirukanitha Panchangam is followed by modern Tamil families and by temples that have adopted Drik computational reform — including most newer temples and some traditional temples that have explicitly switched. Conservative Saiva and Sri Vaishnava temples (especially Srirangam, Chidambaram, and Madurai Meenakshi) generally continue with Vakya for ritual continuity.
