Advaita Peethams & the Four Amnayas
Adi Shankaracharya (788-820 CE) established the four Amnaya (cardinal) Peethams at the four corners of India: Sringeri (south — Dakshina Amnaya), Dwarka (west — Paschima Amnaya), Puri Govardhana (east — Purva Amnaya), and Jyotir Math / Joshimath (north — Uttara Amnaya). The Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham is also an important Smarta Advaita seat with its own panchangam.
Each peetham issues an annual panchangam aligned with the Smarta tradition's tithi-determination rules, Acharya Jayanti and Aradhana dates, Chaturmasya observances, and the peetham's seva schedule. The Sringeri Panchangam is notable for declaring use of the classical Surya Siddhanta tradition.
