Mithila & the Maithili Calendrical Tradition
The Mithila region (Bihar + adjoining Nepali Terai) has a distinct Maithili calendrical tradition. The most authoritative reference is the Mithila Vishwavidyalaya Panchang, published since 1978-79 by Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (KSDSU) and based on the ancient text Makrand. It is also called Mithila Raj Panchang, referencing the erstwhile Darbhanga Raj patronage.
A separate tradition is the Tirhuta Panchang — a tropical solar Hindu calendar where the year begins on 1st Baishakh, distinguishing it from the lunar-solar panchangs used elsewhere in India.
