Kannada Panchangas — Smarta & Madhwa Streams

Kannada panchangas serve three distinct traditions: Smarta Advaita (Sringeri tradition), Madhwa Dvaita (Uttaradi Math, Vyasaraja Math, Mantralaya/Raghavendra, the eight Udupi mathas), and Sri Vaishnava (Parakala Math). The Madhwa stream is particularly distinctive — Madhwa Vaishnavas follow specific tithi-determination rules for Ekadashi and Janmashtami that differ from Smarta tradition.

The widest-circulation general-purpose Kannada panchanga is the Bangalore Press Mallige Panchanga Darshini, launched in 1990 by The Bangalore Press (founded 1916 by Sir M. Visvesvaraya). Karnataka households typically also consult the matha-specific panchanga for their sampradaya.

The Kannada year begins on Yugadi (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada).
