What is Brahma Muhurta?

Brahma Muhurta literally means "the Creator's hour". The night from sunset to sunrise is divided into fifteen equal muhurtas, and Brahma Muhurta is the fourteenth of them — from two muhurtas before sunrise to one muhurta before it. In Bengaluru last night that made each muhurta 49 minutes long, so the window ran 4:32 AM – 5:21 AM and closed 49 minutes before the sun came up at 6:10 AM. In Sanskrit cosmology this is when Lord Brahma, the cosmic Creator, is most accessible, and consciousness is at its most luminous. The Charaka Samhita, the foundational Ayurvedic text, prescribes waking during this window as the single most important habit for longevity, mental clarity and spiritual progress. Modern chronobiology corroborates the timing: cortisol naturally rises before sunrise, atmospheric oxygen is at its highest, and alpha-wave activity associated with meditative states is most pronounced.

How this window is worked out

Because the muhurta is a fifteenth of the actual night, both its start and its length change with the season and the latitude: it is around 45 minutes long in September and around 55 minutes long at the December solstice. Some almanacs publish a fixed 96 minutes before sunrise lasting 48 minutes instead; this site uses the proportional rule everywhere, which is also what its festival muhurat windows are computed from.

For Bengaluru (12.972°N, 77.594°E) the arithmetic runs: the sun set at 6:00 PM yesterday evening and rose at 6:10 AM this morning, a night of 12 h 10 min; a fifteenth of that is 49 minutes; two of those before sunrise is 4:32 AM and one before sunrise is 5:21 AM. Sunrise, sunset and the Abhijit window come from the same engine as today’s panchangam and this city’s choghadiya, so the figures on those pages and this one cannot disagree.

Recommended Schedule During Brahma Muhurta

  1. At 4:32 AM, when the window opens: Wake from sleep. Drink warm water. Light evacuation. Bathe in cool water if possible (Ayurveda recommends).
  2. First third of the window: Light a ghee lamp, sit facing east. Begin with three to five deep ujjayi breaths to centre yourself, then pranayama — Anulom Vilom, Kapalabhati, Bhramari.
  3. Second third: Mantra japa with a mala — 108 cycles of your ishta-mantra or the universal Gayatri.
  4. Final third, to 5:21 AM: Silent meditation, sitting with the breath until the window closes.
  5. Pratah Sandhya, 5:46 AM – 6:34 AM: Sandhya Vandanam (twilight worship), Surya Namaskara, Aditya Hridayam recitation as the sun rises at 6:10 AM.

Recommended Mantras for Bengaluru Brahma Muhurta

Abhijit Muhurta — The Other Daily Sacred Window

While Brahma Muhurta is dawn-centred, the day's other most-auspicious time is Abhijit Muhurta, the eighth of the fifteen parts the daylight is divided into, which straddles solar midday. In Bengaluru today it runs 11:41 AM – 12:28 PM. This is the recommended window for signing important documents, starting new ventures, weddings, vehicle purchase, and any activity seeking solar (Surya) blessings. The Mahabharata records that the war began at Abhijit Muhurta, considered invincible by Lord Krishna.

Pratah Sandhya

Sandhya means "junction". Pratah Sandhya is the junction of night and day — a muhurta of 48 minutes centred on sunrise, which in Bengaluru today is 5:46 AM – 6:34 AM. It is the prescribed time for Sandhya Vandanam and the Gayatri, and it begins where Brahma Muhurta ends: the two windows are consecutive, not overlapping.

Scientific + Ayurvedic Reasoning

The Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana 5.27) states: "Brahme muhurte uttishthet swastho rakshartham aayushah" — "One who wakes during Brahma Muhurta and stays healthy guards their lifespan." Modern chronobiology confirms: vata dosha (movement energy) peaks pre-dawn, making the body naturally alert; melatonin levels drop, signalling wakefulness; cortisol rises, providing alert energy without anxiety. The Ayurvedic recommendation aligns with the body's natural circadian biology, making this the only time of day where waking up feels effortless once habituated.
