Durga Suktam

దుర్గా సూక్తం

7 verses invoking Durga as Jatavedas (the form of Agni who knows all) · Composed by Anonymous Vedic Rishi; preserved as a Khila Suktam · Khila portion of the Rigveda; also in Taittiriya Aranyaka 10.1

Sanskrit (Devanagari)

ॐ जातवेदसे सुनवाम सोममरातीयतो निदहाति वेदः । स नः पर्षदति दुर्गाणि विश्वा नावेव सिन्धुं दुरितात्यग्निः ॥

Transliteration (IAST)

Oṃ Jātavedase Sunavāma Somam-Arātīyato Nidahāti Vedaḥ / Sa Naḥ Parṣad-Ati Durgāṇi Viśvā Nāveva Sindhuṃ Duritāty-Agniḥ

English Translation

To Agni (the All-Knowing, Jatavedas), we offer the Soma. May he burn away all our enemies. May he, like a boat across the ocean, carry us safely across all difficulties (durga) and across all evil.

About the Durga Suktam

The Durga Suktam is the Vedic foundation of Durga worship — preserved as a Khila (supplementary) Suktam to the Rigveda and also in the Taittiriya Aranyaka. Unlike the later Puranic Durga of the Devi Mahatmyam (who slays Mahishasura), the Vedic Durga is invoked through the form of Agni — the All-Knowing Fire that burns away difficulties and carries the soul safely across the ocean of samsara. The seven verses are concentrated, dense, and powerful. During Navaratri (nine nights of the Goddess), traditional families recite the Durga Suktam daily, often combined with the Sri Suktam and Lakshmi Suktam. The phrase "carry us across like a boat across the ocean" makes this the prayer for any difficult passage — surgery, court cases, dangerous travel, financial crisis, spiritual struggle. The Durga Suktam is shorter than most Vedic Suktas (only 7 verses), making it accessible to recite daily. Often combined with the Sapta Shloki Durga (seven verses from the Devi Mahatmyam) for complete protection.

Pronunciation Notes

The word "Jatavedas" is the key name — it identifies Durga as Agni in his protective aspect. The compound "Durgāṇi Viśvā" (all difficulties) is the most emphatic phrase.

How to Practice

  1. Preparation: Take a bath or wash face/hands/feet. Wear clean clothes (saffron, white, or yellow preferred).
  2. Seat: Sit on a wool blanket or grass mat (asana). Face east or north. Keep spine straight.
  3. Mala: Use a 108-bead mala (rudraksha for Shiva mantras, tulsi for Vishnu mantras, sphatika/quartz for universal).
  4. Sankalpa: Take a vow stating today's date, your name, and the purpose of the practice.
  5. Recite: 11 daily during Navaratri. Maintain steady rhythm — neither rushed nor too slow.
  6. End: Bow with folded hands. Dedicate the merit to all beings ("Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah").
