వినాయక చవితి
Vinayaka Chaturthi (Ganesh Chaturthi)
10 September 2026 | Major Festival
Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed remover of obstacles and god of wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings. It is one of the grandest Hindu festivals, especially in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
Significance
Lord Ganesha, son of Shiva and Parvati, is the first deity worshipped before any auspicious undertaking. Born of Parvati's sandalwood paste and given an elephant head by Shiva after a divine incident, Ganesha embodies wisdom, intellect, and the power to remove obstacles (Vighnaharta). Worshipping him on Chaturthi is believed to bring success in new ventures, education, business, and spiritual pursuits.
Date & Muhurtam
Vinayaka Chaturthi in 2026 falls on Thursday, 10 September, on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month. The Madhyahna Kala (midday) muhurtam between 11:00 AM and 1:30 PM is considered the most auspicious for Ganesha sthapana and puja, as Ganesha is believed to have been born during this time. Devotees should avoid looking at the moon on this night, as per the Syamantaka Mani legend.
Rituals & Traditions
Clay idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and pandals. The puja includes shodashopachara (16-step worship) with offerings of 21 modakas (Ganesha's favorite sweet), 21 durva grass blades, red flowers, and coconut. The Ganesha Atharvashirsha and Sankashtanashana Stotra are recited. In Andhra Pradesh, patri (21 leaves of different sacred plants) is essential. The festival lasts 1, 3, 5, 7, or 11 days, ending with Ganesha Visarjan — immersion of the idol in water.
Regional Variations
In Maharashtra, Ganesh Chaturthi is the biggest festival with massive public pandals, especially the famous Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana celebrate it as Vinayaka Chavithi with the Khairatabad Ganesh in Hyderabad standing over 60 feet tall. Karnataka calls it Ganesha Habba with home-based clay idol worship. Tamil Nadu observes it as Vinayagar Chaturthi with kozhukattai offerings. Goa celebrates Chavath with traditional matoli decorations.
Mantras & Prayers
వక్రతుండ మహాకాయ సూర్యకోటి సమప్రభ |
నిర్విఘ్నం కురు మే దేవ సర్వకార్యేషు సర్వదా ||
O Lord with the curved trunk and mighty body, radiant as a million suns — please make all my endeavors free from obstacles, always and everywhere.
Fasting Rules
Devotees observe a fast from sunrise until the midday puja. Some keep a strict Nirjala fast, while others consume fruits, milk, and sabudana. Grains and salt are typically avoided. The fast is broken with modaka prasad after the puja. The Sankashti Chaturthi fast (observed monthly on Krishna Paksha Chaturthi) follows similar rules and is broken only after moonrise. Devotees recite the Sankata Nashana Ganesha Stotra during the fast for relief from troubles.
